Part of it is getting up at nite (you know the extra bathroom stops) and the dog waking me at 5:30-6AM. So then it's crash time on the couch after supper...help.

A wise man once said "you should go to bed the same day you get up!"

However, I march to the beat of my own drum and go to bed when I want and get up when I want.

I also encourage the dog to sleep on my husband's side of the bed! I.E. don't bother me.

My trusty iPod and an ebook with sleep button set. The story has to be good enough to keep me from thinking about anything else.

I fall asleep in minutes and have for years.

Me too! I love Agatha Christie or Diana Gabaldon the most. Right now I am listening to "All But My Life" which is very sad so I listen in small doses to digest it all.

I must confess some 11 hour books can last me weeks as I set it for 30 minute snooze, but rarely make 10!

Three activities generally help me go to sleep (I don't do them all on the same night):

Win three games of solitaire;

Read a few pages of Costumes of the World (it's a huge book that I've been reading bit by bit for 2.5 years);

Write in my journal.

If all else fails I take two Benadryl tablets.

Working out at the gym about five days a week.

No naps after dinner. Your sleep clock logs those, and in effect, you will be shorted the same amount during the night that follows.

We love our furry children, but animals that need to go out in the wee hours of the morning, and especially animals in the bedroom, are incompatible with unbroken sleep . No joke. Anything that disturbs or interrupts your sleep cycles (kids, pets, even a little too much light in the room) is death to a good night's rest.

Actually, realistically, you could try a timed, 20 minute nap in the mid-afternoon. It might just keep you alert enough to stay awake in the early evening.

If that fails, try an after-dinner walk with the dog. That might rouse you enough to stay awake until a proper bedtime.

I do the same as Annie-oh and Sharon1952, except I use podcasts on my ipod. I like Science, but anything that interests you, but not enough to keep you awake is good. I use earphones so i don't wake DH, and if I wake at night I plug them in again to listen a bit more. Stops me from worrying about things at night.

Any time I can actually make it until 5:30 (when our clock radio comes on) without waking up, I call that "sleeping thru the night". I do well to get five straight hours of sleep. I'll be reading the answers here, too.

ETA --- lately, I've stopped drinking any type of liquid after 6:30 p.m. (duh) It seems to help.
