I'm so proud of myself xD I did it in about three weeks, and the first fitting was the day before the wedding

It is a strapless style bodice with one shoulder drape (and an elastic strap to hold it up under the drape!), an empire waistline and layered gathered skirt. I also made a belt with four flowers that had tiny rhinestones in the center of each flower.

This was my first time working with chiffon, and I was beyond nervous. I used the gelatin trick to give it some shape while I worked with it. The skirt is two layers of chiffon and one of a luxurious jersey fabric. I didn't want anything too heavy or that might irritate her skin, plus the jersey fabric gave me a bit of flexibility if she grew suddenly between when she gave me her measurements and the wedding. The top bodice I based off a McCalls prom type dress, but I made an over layer of gathered chiffon on the strapless part, to pull together the gathered chiffon aspect.

The fitting went surprisingly well. I had to take in about five inches off the back, and add a tiny dart on each side the morning of (I think I was a little too careful with taking it in.) I had also left the zipper insertion and lining until after fitting her, so I could be sure it would all work out. I ended up putting boning in the two side seams and along the zipper, to help keep everything up.

She wanted the dress to be a bit more "casual" than your typical wedding ball gown, because it was a noon wedding, outdoors, on an island on the Delaware river. XD I think it turned out beautiful, and I am absurdly proud of myself for designing it and getting it together.

The only downside is that bugs kept crawling between the layers of chiffon. Oops!!! XD

2014 resolution: keep track of sewn yardage!! I'm subtracting fabric given away from my yardage in. Yeah!

I'll try anything once :)

Please excuse my typos...sometimes it is harder to go back and edit on mobile than it is worth!

How lovely! It looks like it came right off a Greek statue.

I've quit fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now.

It's just fabric; we can out-think it.

You are AWESOME!

Let's see:

Chiffon
Boning
One shoulder
Long-distance fitting of a moving (growing) target
Crazy brief timetable with major elements saved for the night before the event

Let's see, that gives a difficulty rating of...INSANE.
Multiplied by your execution score of EXQUISITELY BEAUTIFUL =

PLATINUM medal for best sister/sewing of all time. Or would you prefer a diamond-encrusted tiara?

Total. Respect.

What an excellent sister you are! You are my official fantasy sister.

What a gorgeous dress! Your sister is a very lucky gal. And the dress makes her look like a Grecian Statue. GREAT JOB! (P.S. I don't have a sister, only brothers, would you be minE!? LOL!)

Now this is an example of why everyone should sew. There are an abundance of situations in life where nothing could possibly suit like this sister's beautiful dress. Thanks for sharing
