Yesterday, I had the opportunity to play on a Viking Opal machine. I can't remember the exact number, but it is the top model in the opal line. It is a very nice machine! I like the built in scissors and I like that it has features on it that even my Sapphire 835 lacks! It sews nicely and seemed fairly quiet too. I did miss being able to tap my pedal to lower and raise the presser foot. It took a moment to remember I had to use a lever. Lol. Over all, the 15 or so minutes I used it, it seems to be a very nice and easy to use machine! just thought I would share about my play date. :)

You can tap the foot peddle for the needle up, needle down on the 650. I do it all the time.

I love the look of the Opals. I almost bought the 650 as a Christmas present for my kids last year, but I didn't want to spend so much on a machine for them. I ended up getting the H-Class 100q which they absolutely love.

It was actually the auto raising and lowering of the presser foot that I missed, not the needle.I am no longer used to a lever since my 835 doesn't have one.

The Opals are very nice machines! I quite liked the one I sewed on. I wouldn't mind winning one. HA!

I bought one about a month a go to use as a back up/class machine. It is wonderful and sews over anything. I am using it for my main sewing machine right now with my Elisimo Gold set up for embroidery - kind of like that set up!!

Ah, I read that wrong :). blame the sickies.
The presser foot raising & lowering would drive me crazy. I need a lever.

That does look like a nice machine. I'm guessing it has adjustable needle positions so you can sew a 1/4" and scant 1/4" without switching to a 1/4" foot. I've gotten so used to using my Foot A for piecing, machine appliqué and zig-zagging.

Yes, it does and it is quickly turning into my favorite feature.

I will add that I tried this machine out at a Sewing center in Joann. Is it me, or does it seem like the sales staff hovers over you at the sewing centers?? I would have played with the machine longer, but I didn't feel like I could without someone hovering over me. Was that just me or have others felt this way? It actually felt a lot like going to a car dealership and having a salesman following you around...even though you have already mentioned wanting to "look". Annoying!
