I can't help with locating a pattern, but, dang, $98 is a lot of money!
(and it doesn't even have tummy-control!)

Indie pattern company Closet Case Files has just published a digital pattern for a retro-inspired swimsuit; I hope this links to the Etsy store: Etsy
You could always add that bottom ruffle. Carolyn S. posted a review here on 6/7; I know that Kidmd has also made one - very cute!!

That straight line formed by the bottom of the suit cuts right across the widest part of the models' hips/thighs; I'd hardly call that "universally flattering."

At 58, I have recently been tempted to enter the Mrs. Wyoming contest. For the swimsuit part of the competition I thought perhaps a version of http://www.folkwear.com/253.html. Personally I think I'd be adorable and a real standout in the competition.

It's just fabric; we can out-think it.

It's very similar to this Bombshell swimsuit pattern ... red version with a ruffle at the hem.

I actually bought a vintage Kwik Sew that I looove the look of:

Etsy

It was about $6 on Etsy. You could easily add the other details and modify the top using a pattern like this as a starting point.

Here is a different one:

Also on Amazon: Amazon

I like lots about this- the bust support, the higher neckline and the thigh cut. It looks comfortable. In Japan I saw lots of women wear swimwear with matched shorts or skirt.
I am thinking I will try sewing this style and add shorts or skirt if legs aren't flattering.

I totally agree with you both. It takes some very specific sifting but there are lots of gems out there to be found in vintage. I like the princess seams there for fit and flatter - also nice shaping to the bottom of the suit...
