A couple of weeks ago I ordered the Shirtmaking book and DVD by David Coffin. I wanted to start making some shirts for my husband.

In the meantime I got a coverstitch machine and I have been practicing, so now I want to make myself some knitted tops. So, I placed an order with PR for some top patterns today. I sort of remembered I had a book called 'Sewing with Knits', so I went to look for it. Under that book was Shirtmaking by David Coffin. I must have bought that years ago. Now I have two.

This isn't the first time this has happened. I've done it with quilting pattern books and gadgets. Now I wonder if I already have some of those patterns I ordered today. I also discovered I have two copies of 'Essential Sewing Guide' by Nancy Zieman. This is depressing. I could have spent the money on fabric instead.

Please tell me I'm not the only one doing this

Sure, whatever you say. I think the ancient, forgetful gremlins have ordered the old copy of ______ that shows up in my sewing room. Just as the new one arrives at my door. Couldn't be me.

I did it so often that I started keeping a spreadsheet of my books (and patterns). Fortunately, usually I was able to return the duplicates when I realized that I already had them. Sometimes the library has been the beneficiary of my memory lapses.

On the other hand, the spreadsheet can be a shock seeing the count of books I have! Friends of the Library, EGA garage sales, and Half Price Books...sometimes I'm not sure I should be so happy about them!

List the duplicate books in the classifieds. I would buy them from you but I have both already. Don't beat yourself up!

Are you kidding?? It's nice to know I'm not alone in this. Years ago, like in 1995 or 1996, I bought Nancy Zieman's Fitting Finesse. I wanted to learn some new techniques of altering patterns. I didn't read it much; only glanced through it, but I used it to protect the table once when I used my tracing wheel to trace darts. The book had small and barely noticeable, tracing wheel "divots" in it. Well, I figured I'd never use it again, so I sold it for a cheap price.

Fast forward to about four years ago. And, again, I wanted to learn some new techniques of altering patterns. I figured I was retired and could spend the time. Did a search, and found Fitting Finesse looked interesting (my ancient mind didn't think I had it before). So I bought it--IT WAS THE EXACT SAME BOOK! Divots and all... Talk about "recycling"...

There must be a good half dozen books that I have duplicated. How does that happen? I have no clue...
