I'm sewing a maxi dress in some of that lovely Free Spirit cotton voile. (Got it on massive sale too, at fabric.com, yea!) I've been using plain cotton voile, the less expensive kind, for summer dresses for a while. My source changed their stuff with my last order and it's stiffer than before, it's simply not working at all. Need to call them about that.

Now, I can cut the skirt lining and attach a new skirt lining, so I'm not going to panic.

But it occurs to me that the extra length could do with extra drape and I thought about using rayon challis. It's breathable, doesn't stick and you can't beat it for drape. Perhaps I will cut the lining way short above the knee? And maybe even leave the side seams open towards the bottom of the lining?

Good idea. I love rayon challis. I wear it as regular dress fabric during the summer.

Yes, I have two other dresses out of it, I guess that's what I thought of it. Thanks, I'm happy to have the feedback.

I have a skirt with a half lining as you describe--only it's a little below the knee with two side slits. Above the knee you may not need the slits. It's not cut as full as the outer skirt and that is fine. I love it.
