I got a txt from my sister today asking if I wanted a Serger. My step-mom who is moving to a new house gave her a serger! My sis hardly sews and so offered it to me. I've used a serger all of once in my life when I was in High School making pants for a play. I can't even remember how to use it now since it wasn't my serger to begin with. It's a Juki serger and according to you all that means it should be good. I have no idea the model number. I'm completely perplexed by this development!

How will I even learn to use such a device?

Just like each time when you get a new car, a new computer with a new operating system in it, or just anything else! I'm sure you will be fine, but it does have more threads than a sewing machine, and works different, so also just like everyone else, when you first get it in front of you, it is going to take a little "getting use to". Best of all way to use it though just at first, might even be to have your step mom whom might already know how to use it, at least sit and sew with you on it, for a little bit and show you how to thread it up and all that I would think. But you should have a lot of fun with it!

That would be extremely awesome, but unfortunately my step-mom lives something like 1500 miles away, is taking care of my infirm father, and just started a new job and is unlikely to visit me. I am unfortunately unable to visit her either.

Are there any online tutorials anywhere that people recommend?

Congrats! Go to the serger forum and ask if anyone has a manual they'd be willing to copy for you, or part with, if one doesn't come with it.
And, also ask for serger book recommendations there. There are a couple of really good serger books out there, but their names escape me right now. I'll look on my bookshelf for you tonight, I know I have one that's supposed to be really good, but I never needed it.

Craftsy.com has some basic serger classes, all videos so you can replay them, ask the teacher questions, etc. I've heard good things about them, too. They co$t, but often they go on sale.

PR offers a great class on serger use too - nice intro for sure - I took it to make myself learn. Craftsy may have something, but anyhow I bet YouTube has loads of helpful videos for free. :)

And then there is US!!!!! You are going to love that machine. I mean with kids clothing it wil be great! And you can serge quilting too you know. For a fast utility quilt - serge it for the piecing! Lots on that online as well.

Remember you don't have to buy four cones of every color - just go with "darks" "mediums" and "lights." I even dispence with the "mediums" and go with dark and lighter.

So excited for you! You will wonder how you ever got along with out a serger in a couple of days! One of my favorite books is "The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide" by Naomi Baker/Gail Brown and Cindy Kacynski. Page 59 is on Juki Inside Insights - the book is old 1996 but maybe you can get it at the library and a couple of others - like Serge with Confidence by Nancy Zieman. She has a number of episodes on her show (you can find it on u tube.) If you model is newer you might be able to get a DVD with instructions on how to operate from All Brands, or Ken's. Btw, I enjoyed the Angela Wolf Serging class (more for advance serging/coverhem) on Craftsy, she is excellent and of course the one of pr gets rave reviews to - "Break your serger out of the box" by Jennifer Stern!

Jenn Stern's serger class here on PR is great! I've taken it; and it really got me over my fear.

Don't forget Juki USA website... My Internet connection is doggedly slow tonight, otherwise I'd post the link. You could probably find and download the manual and threading charts.
