Has anyone started making Christmas gifts yet? Does anyone have suggestions of projects that are clever and genuinely useful. In the past I have given such things as handbags, casserole carriers, garments, potholders with microwave vegetable cookers, pillowcases...to give you an idea of the kind of suggestions I am looking for. I like to give handmade gifts for Christmas instead of purchased ones. I prefer they be something using my sewing machine and not just craftsy (is that a word??) items such jewelry. These gifts would be for adults as well as children. Any suggestions? I am open to any idea. Thank you

There was a thread here somewhere (started, I think, in May, maybe earlier) about getting a jump on at least planning the sewing for Christmas gifts.

My contributions (some I made last year) were:

Coffee sleeves (there are several good tutorials out there) - especially for anyone who wants to "go green" with their Starbucks, lol. I made this one from The House on Hill Road

Camera strap cover - again, there are many good tutorials, for lined, or patchwork, or other types. Some are in the last link in this post.

Gift bags - I intend to try this. At the after Christmas sales, I purchased a different Christmas print for each family member, and will sew a bag (or 2 or 3) for them, instead of using wrapping paper. Then store and reuse in following years! Again, there are several tutorials out there.

Oh, and if there are family members that like cosmetic bags, the
Open Wide zipper pouch from noodlehead is just a teeny bit different - and you can nest the sizes. I added the key ring from her "cute little pouch" to them (some on the inside of the bag). I also made her gathered clutch. Here's a list of all her tutorials.

And finally, a HUGE list of free patterns/projects from Scrap Happy.

I could really use something like that! Where did you find the project instructions?
Thanks!

The Sew Mama Sew site is another good source for ideas; they have put together a variety of lists of projects good for gifting (check their archives for Novembers, they have done this more than one year, also there has been something during summers but I think that was more of a theme like bags for summer).

I have done handmade gifts when I can (I work at a small school, and make gifts for Younger Son' teachers and my coworkers), including heat packs, water bottle carriers, organizers to go over coffee mugs, box bags with sandwich wrap and snack bag included, tote bags, handwarmers...and I'm keeping an eye out for somethings good for next year...

Something that is always used and needs to be replaced is what I like. Especially if ev eryone uses it... like the apron made from a man's shirt, specially trimmed towels for bath and for kitchen. I like making something that will be used and abused and then missed terribly when it's gone.

Janie
I like your thinking. Makes your gift that much more appreciated! I think I will embrace it for all my future gifts.
