I promised my husband I wouldn't hole up this entire weekend but I know I need to get some sewing done!

Today, instead of making a garment, I decided to practice welts.

Attempt #1 good choice to use cotton, not as good to use a print. Horrible attempt to stitch in the ditch:

Attempt #2 horrible fabric choice - it doesn't press and distorts as you work with it (it's a freebie I got and use for muslining):

Attempt #3 MUCH better. A couple more practice runs and I'll have it down. Although, if I were making these for a garment, I'd probably be okay with them! But no need to settle for "ok" when I know I can get "Good!" with just a little more effort.

Any tips for turning the corners better?

I'm going to practice using her technique. This is absolute perfection!

Looks to me like one of the secrets to turning the welt so cleanly is that she doesn't have two layers of stitching across the short ends, just one.

Janet Pray in her Craftsy class (and in her pattern instructions) doesn't sew a box around the welt either.

Carefully clipping into the corners is very important to getting a good outcome. The other tip I have is to make sure that the welts are even before you stitch the triangles together.

Who is the forum member with the silk organza facing tutorial? I had even better luck with that (even using lightweight linen instead of silk organza).

Oh! It's the Gorgeous Fabrics tutorial:

What a great idea to spend a block of time practicing welt pockets. I've put this off for years. Thanks for the inspiration.

You're sure getting the hang of it -- wow.

Thanks everyone!

I hope to get a bit of practice with the suggestions given here, this week, and be ready to cut my 2nd pair of pants this weekend and add welts! :)
