I have two neighbors who want me to teach them to sew. They are looking for a sewing machine somewhere in the $300 range. I am a bernina girl and am only familiar with the higher end machines. I know WHAT to look for in a machine but I'm not familiar with the quality of the lower end/beginer type machines. One neighbor wants to be able to hem her jeans, the other is interested in crafty projects.
I am turning to my PR friends for suggestions on particular machines I should steer them to.
In my area I have access to janome, singer, elna, juki, and maybe brother. I refuse to go into the babylock store as their customer service is...

If I'm not mistaken (I'm a Bernina girl too) Brother and Juki make some nice reasonably priced machines. So does Janome. We seem to have a lot of dealers for that around here!

personally, i would look at Juki. if i am not mistaken, someone on PR posted that HSN is having a Juki sale(a Brother or 2 on sale also along with the "S" brand, which I do not suggest, except to keep away from). i would also check out Brother. for $300.00....Juki might be your best bet??? if all else fails, maybe a good old mechanical machine. with the HSN sale. they can try it for 30 days. plus flex pay. maybe free shipping. no tech support.

WHy not see if you can get a Bernina that's older like a 830 or a 930? They last forever and perhaps someone just "upgraded" at the sewing store and they might have one or two available and they should be in the 200 to 300 range.

In Hancocks ad July 18-21st the Janome 8050 will be on sale for $279.99.
I agree some of the older machines are fantastic but if just learning to sew it would be good for them both to have the same machine and I think new would be the best way to go especially if the older machine has had any problems, etc. Plus the smell of new is always cool to get anyone motiviated. Just a thought....
also check out: Janome 1050 and Janome 8077 from Amazon.com.
