Subject: Bernina 550 or 710 or Janome Horizon 8900???? Date: 7/7/13 1:10 PM

I haven't seen many reviews on either of the Bernina's on here -- anyone have them? Also, I was really wanting to know the dimensions of both machines too. I have a cabinet and want to know if they will fit, but can't seem to find the dimensions anywhere. I have both brochures and the size isn't on there anywhere. I have the dimensions of the Horizon since it is on the brochure.
Thanks.

I had a 550QE and it fit into a standard Gidget table. The 710 would need the larger Gidget II table or any other sewing furniture with the new larger openings. The Gidget tables are purely for reference, though they do a good job for the money.

I will also add that I use the Janome Muffling Mat under my machines. They're awesome!

There is a thread here titled "Poll on Bernina 780, 750, & 710". I recommend reading that. I was looking at the 750, but there seems to be ALOT of problems with the 7 series........take a look at what other members have experienced. Good luck with your search

Haven't heard of the muffling mat - sounds really good though. Thanks so much.

Connie,
thank you so much - I had looked at reviews, but didn't know to look under the threads -- lots of information there!

Sorry I can't help with dimensions, but I TOO am considering the 7 series. In fact, I ordered a new cabinet on Friday in anticipation of a 750 QE as I'm certain it won't fit in my Horn cabinet. I do know the 710 requires an XL size Tutto bag if that helps.

I've read "the thread" but all its done is delay my purchase for a month or two to see if the part needed to fix tension issues works . . .but I know with certainty that Bernina engineers will have the problem resolved and in the end, will be a fabulous machine.

In my humble opinion... I would stay away from the 7 series. Too much risk and aggravation. The 550 is based on the Aurora machines and they are proven work horses. There are many members who continue to struggle with tension issues of the 7 Series machines... and right now there is no permanent cure.

Not to mention, the B9 hook system has not been incorporated into any other machines since. I'm wondering if Bernina is having second thoughts about this hook design.
