This is not a fitting woe (yet) so I don't know if I'm posting to the right place but...has anyone taken any of the classes offered by Cynthia Guffey at sewing expos? There's one in Pittsburgh in August and she's doing three fitting classes--fitting the front bodice, fitting the back bodice and fitting below the waist. I'm thinking of taking the "below the waist". She's also doing a shorter pants class. Anyone with any experience with these? Comments?

I thought you were going to give us a poem "fitting woe, so I don't know".

I have seen her on Its Sew Easy, but have never taken a class. She seems to be very to the point.

Have taken several CG classes at the Minneapolis Sewing Expo -- learned a lot and has really helped me with fitting myself. I took her all day class and several of her 1 hour and 2 hour classes. She's a fun instructor but pulls no punches when giving you tips.

From CG I learned the value of gored skirts and shoulder princess tops for my body type. Also got valuable tips on adding where the fabric is needed and not at the side seams.

Take any that you can -- IMHO they are all worthwhile.

I'm from the Baton Rouge area and that is where Cynthia lived at the time. I've never taken one of her classes but I did contact her by phone about 6 or 7 years ago and had to leave a message on her answer machine. To my utter surprise she called me back and answered ALL my questions on fit issues I was having mainly for a full bust. She gave me some fantastic tips! She was very nice to talk with and talked for quite a while too! I've heard that her classes are fantastic! Take them if you can.

I have a few of her dvd's and I think she's a very good instructor. I would take a class with her if I had the opportunity!

Thanks, everyone. You've convinced me that I need to take at least one or two of her classes. The question now is: which one(s)? on offer:
Fitting the Loose Jacket (3 sessions)
How to Make Your Best Jacket--Interior Structure
Fitting the Back Bodice
Fitting the Front Bodice
Fitting Below the Waist
7 Core Sewing Skills
Pant Lessons

Has anyone taken any of these? Comments?

I was scheduled to take all of these classes at last November's Sewing Expo in Minneapolis -- unfortunately CG had a family emergency and was unable to attend so the classes were cancelled.

The all day class I took in fall of 2011 focussed on upper back curve, shoulder slope and shoulder width with some work on bust points and FBA. Very beneficial class. I know for one of the classes I was going to take last year we had to make a jacket muslin prior to the class -- I think it was for another full day class (I'd have to go look at the project I have set aside -- I'm hoping to take the class at some point in the future).

Cynthia is awesome, take all the classes you can from her! She is not your typical expo instructor - she will cover a much smaller amount of material but in much greater detail, as evidenced by how her fitting classes are split up. (One entire class I took was soley devoted to installing pants zippers.)

She is very direct and to the point, definitely believes in "doing it right" over "doing it pretty good but saving time". From what I've experienced her teaching concentrates on tailoring and couture techniques, no "sweatshirt to cardigan" conversions in her classes!

Take good notes, and don't be afraid to ask questions. I've taken several of her classes at the Minneapolis expo, get to the classroom early if you can, she is hilarious and SO down to earth in her pre-class chats with the attendees, and may even share her awesome crockpot fudge recipe with you!

When I go to the Atlanta expo, I sign up for all the classes of CG that I can fit in my schedule. I also purchased all her fitting DVDs. Her one hour lectures cover a lot of material whereas her longer classes are hands on. CG and Peggy Sagers classes are the only ones I bother with. I found most of the others a waste of time. Wait until you go to a class before purchasing any DVDs, you will get a better deal.
