There is an old Bernina 700 listed on Gumtree. Is it likley to be a good machine and does anyone have any info about them? The net has very little.

It's pretty old (50 - 60 yrs), but pretty solid. It only does straight and zig-zag stitches. You can tell by the paint that is worn off, right in the front, that it has been used hard. The motors on these old Berninas get tired. I worked on a 730 today that had a tired motor. It did a beautiful stitch, but it couldn't run very fast. The foot controls wear out and you'd have to replace it with something plastic. I wouldn't pay more than $75 for it.

Thanks for the response
I think I'll just save up for a new 430 or 550.
It is frustrating not having a great machine to sew on while I save.

I was given an old 731, and it's a peach. I don't use it as much as my other Berninas, because it doesn't have the knee lift or needle down heel tap functions, but it sews beautifully, sounds lovely, and looks gorgeous. It's obviously used, but wasn't abused-it stitches like a dream.

There's nothing quite like the old machines, and I have older (731, 930, 1020, 1030) and newer (240, 440, 630, 820) Berninas, older Singers, and newer machines from Pfaff, Brother, Baby Lock.

Everytime I think I should re-home that 731, I take it out to photograph and inventory it, and end up sewing something and loving it too much to let it go.

Maia, I have a 731 as well, that has a reconditioned motor in it. Works brilliantly.
I have been tempted to sell it when I was reducing my herd a while back but couldn't quite do it. Gorgeous vintage looks, wonderful stitch.
They are lovely machines.

Hi Heidi,
Did you end up getting the 700? I'm looking at one too. Hoping to test it out beforehand.

No, I passed. I eventually got a new Bernina 380 at the end of the year and I love it :)
