Hello Everyone

I will be your Contest Manager for the Sewing for Children Contest which is running from August 1st to August 31st.

Please note that there are some rule changes from previous years -- if you have any questions on whether or not your project will be eligible, ask ahead of time to avoid confusion and disappointment at the end of the contest.

Sewing for Children Contest

Sponsored by

The purpose of this contest is to sew baby and children's clothing. Unlike the 2011 Sewing for Children contest, children's accessories may NOT be entered as a stand alone entry; however, accessories like toys, craft items or home dec may accompany the clothing entry as long as it's sewn.

The rules for this contest:

1. Contest entry must include an article of clothing. Clothing includes tops, bottoms, dresses, vests, rompers, hats, diaper covers, outerwear, underwear, pajamas, swimwear, etc. Contest manager will determine eligibility of clothing item so entrants are encouraged to check early if unclear on eligibility.

2. Accessories (bibs, coordinating doll / pet outfits; home decor; craft items; toys, etc.) may also be included to ENHANCE the entry, but an accessory without an accompanying article of clothing will not be accepted as an entry.

3. Items must be intended for members of your own family, friends, acquaintances or charity. As always, items intended for sale are disallowed in this contest.

4. Age of intended recipient may be newborn to age 12.
5. Only baby and children patterns will be allowed. If your child has matured into misses/mens sizes, please save your project for a different contest.

6. We know many people consider animals their children, however, for this contest, the definition of baby/children reflects humans only; therefore, clothing, toys or accessories intended for animals are not allowed.

7. At least one photo of the entry is required. Photos on live models are NOT required but are allowed.

8. Self-drafted or commercial patterns are allowed. Combinations of multiple patterns or self-drafted and commercial patterns are allowed. Downloaded patterns and magazine patterns are allowed.

9. First and second place winners will be selected through a vote open to members of PR. Voters should select the entry that has the best fit. Quality of construction and evaluation of how well the entry meets the guidelines of this contest should also be taken into consideration when voting.

10. All cutting of the fabric and sewing can only be done from August 1 - August 31st at 11:59 EST . You may, however, pre-wash fabric, work on muslins, and cut pattern pieces before August 1st.

11. Voting will begin after a 2-day administrative period to resolve any review issues after the contest closes and will close 7 days after voting starts. Thus, voting for this contest will begin on September 3 and close on September 9 at 11:59 EST.

Please note voting has been changed to begin on September 4th and close on September 10th at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Prizes!

First Prize: $100 Gift Certificate from Schmetzneedles.com
Second Prize: $75 Gift Certificate from Schmetzneedles.com

General Rules for all Contests:

1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time (EST) on the last day of the contest. It is suggested to start your review as a Work In Progress (private or public) so that you can get any bugs ironed out prior to the deadline. Although Contest Managers and Contest Committee will help with technical issues, they may not be available at the end of the contest so be sure to allow adequate time to post your entry before the contest ends.

2. Fabric may be pretreated before the start of the contest.

3. Patterns MAY be muslined prior to the start of this contest however, fabric for the contest garment may NOT be cut prior to the start of the contest.

4. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome.

5. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry, preferably on a live model.

6. Interpretation of rules is subject to the discretion of the contest manager and the contest committee.

Contest Eligibility:

***Rule #1 is changed for 2013
1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who is a registered member on the site before the contest begins is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who's won first place in a contest on Pattern Review that ended in the previous four-month period is ineligible to win another contest (during that four-month period). For this contest, first-place winners from the following contests are NOT eligible to win:
* 2013 Pantone Colors
* Pattern Stash
* Natural Fabrics
* Accessory Challenge
* Jeans Contest
* UFO Contest
* Fabric Stash

Voting Guidelines:

1. The first, second and third place winners will be decided by member vote. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners.

2. Each member can vote on up to five entries.

3. Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some guidelines that may help you choose when voting. Consider how well the entry fulfills each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your votes:

* Does the garment clearly reflect the pattern's line drawing?
* How well does the garment fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?
* Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?

* Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?

* Is the review complete and well written?
* Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well does the garment fit?
* Creative points. You may choose to give extra credit here for an entry that reflects additional creativity (embellishment, fabric choice, etc.) while staying within the nature of the original pattern.

* Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex garment might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed.

So there you go -- I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone creates for their kids. You've got 2 weeks to get all your projects lined up so you're ready to go on the start date.

I know I'll be sewing along on some projects for my grandkids -- I have a massive Christmas gift sewing project for all 7 as well as a number of garments I've promised to make.

As of August 21, 2013, there is a new photo uploading process:
New Photo Uploading Process

Check it out!

Voting dates have been changed as of August 29, 2013 -- voting will begin September 4th and close on September 10th at 11:59 p.m. EST.

This post will be reserved for FAQs, rule clarifications, etc. to allow participants to readily find the answers without having to read through the whole thread.

Q: Can I sew for a baby that's due after the contest ends?
A: Yes you most certainly can -- as long as you are not selling the item.

Q: Do we enter multiple garments separately or together?
A: Multiple garments can be entered together as an outfit if you like.

Q: Are we limited to entering a SINGLE item, or could we enter an outfit - say a dress and coat, or a top+bottom?
A: Single items and multiple item outfits are both acceptable entries for this contest.

Q: Are we limited to one entry per person, or can we enter as many children's items as we can sew during the contest period?
A: You can enter the contest as many times as you are able or want to -- keep in mind that your entries will be competing against each other for votes.

Q: Can I use recycled fabric for the contest? Meaning, take a man's coat and cut the back into pieces to make pants for a kid, or use a pillow case to make a dress?
A: Yes you can do re-fashions, re-purposes or up-cycles for this contest.

Q: I am making a new dress for my daughter (3 years old) to wear to the Renaissance festival in October ... but are costumes allowed?
A: Yes, costumes are allowed as long as they meet the other eligibility requirements of the contest.

Just found the Sewing for Children Contest, and I think I have the first question: Contest is 8/1/2013 - 8/31/2013 : Baby's due date is in November 2013. Would articles of clothing for this baby be eligible for entry?
(Clarification: this is my Grand-baby I'm sewing for this time ! )

Yes indeed clothing items for the baby would be eligible

Is this your first grand-baby? Do they know if it's a boy or girl?

I love sewing for my grands -- 6 boys and 1 girl (I waited a long time for that girl and love making her "pretties" as she calls them).

Look forward to seeing your entries -- any idea what you will be making?

I'm in. I'll be working on school clothes for my great nephew. The patterns have been selected and the fabric is already prewashed. I'll be making some shirts and pants for him for preschool.

What a lucky great nephew you have. Look forward to seeing your creations. He'll be one well-dressed dude come fall.

This might be the kick in the pants I need to start sewing for Christmas! Since the live model is not longer a requirement, I'll be able to do it (I'm in TX, they are in AZ, and I wouldn't want to be giving them a Christmas or birthday (Nov 17) before the end of the contest anyway!)

I'm planning on making flannel PJ pants for all 4. Different prints/same colors. Not all of my sister's kids are w/in the age range, but I can enter the younger 2. I may also try something else for my niece. She liked her twirly skirt last year.

This one's going to be a girl. Due date is Nov 27. But, my DD tends to have complications, so we're hoping for even Halloween. She's got a brother, that will be 3 soon after, anxiously waiting. He already gets to play with a baby girl cousin almost every day, so he knows a little of what to expect. Not sure what I'm making yet. But, I do know it will be pink and ruffly. Some of my stash is left over from when DD went through a phase where everything had to be ALL pink. A lot of the Daisy Kingdom fabric didn't pass her inspection. ;-)
Oh, and DD has volunteered her belly as a photo backdrop!

That will make an adorable photo -- can't wait to see what you come up with.

I sewed a lot of PJ pants and t-shirts for 5 grandsons before I got to do the dresses and ruffly things for DGD. I expect she will be the only girl (unless there's an "oops" or something else unexpected).

I'm also sewing fabric I bought for my DD (now 35) and making items for DGD so I know where you're coming from.

Yay! I was planning to sew a little fall trench style jacket for a friend's toddler, was in JoAnn yesterday to pick up a little yardage of corduroy. Now I have a really good reason to get it done!!

I think I'll also sew one for the on the way baby girl of another friend (mom is 40 weeks yesterday, c'mon baby!!).
