This is a warning for anyone who receives an unsolicited SEW NEWS DVD in the mail.

I Just received one yesterday. I first skimmed the email and thought it was a freebie as an enticement to sign up for something. WRONG.

If I don't reply by August 15th, they'll bill me (at 40% off this time, but full price for further DVDs to come). The return letter I am supposed to send gives me two choices: check mark "Yes" for I want this and here's my payment, or "NO" I am returning the DVD.

Here's the real scoop. Legally you don't have to return it. And SEW NEWS knows this, because on page two, it says you can keep it no questions asked, but you must reply.

I'm going to reply "NO", but I'm not returning the DVD because I want to do everything I can discourage this type of "OPT OUT" advertising, and this is the best way to hit them in the pocketbook.

If they have a good product, they shouldn't have to trick people into buying it. Please pass this info on. I worry about people who will open it up and not read the fine print.

Thanks,
Patti

Patt, thank you for your warning about this high pressure, underhanded product mailing. Do you subscribe to Sew News, or did the company simply get your name from some other mailing list? Also, did you have to buy a postage stamp to mail your return letter, or was return postage included?

Thank you for this warning. I had something along the same lines happen with a magazine I've been getting for about a year. They put a cover letter on the one that just arrived, letting me know I didn't have to worry about renewing the subscription, it was going to be done for me "automatically" and I would be billed later. I got on line and opted out of the renewal.

Thank you! I just got back from 2-week vacation and went through my sea of mail. Found the DVD and could not for the life of me remember that I had ordered it before I left. Really appreciate your heads up! Will do the same tactic- say no thanks and keep the DVD. Sneaky and they deserve a smack on the wrist.

Nancy, I do not subscribe to sew news, so I'm guessing the company got my name from a mailing list. The reply envelope says "no postage necessary if mailed in the United States", so thank goodness for that!

You don't have to reply, either. I received one of those for a quilt DVD. I ignored it despite months of notices and they eventually stopped.

Patti, thank you again. By the way, I wonder whether it costs the company more in postage if we send the DVD back vs. keeping it. My hunch is it does.

Just wondering what is on the DVD? I really dislike getting unsolicited stuff like that in the mail. A couple times a year I will get a quilting magazine in the mail wanting me to subscribe.

Are you sure that was even a valid solicitation? Or could it be a scam?
