Hi there. I have no experience at all with sergers but am considering buying one.

Can anyone recommend an excellent book about serging for a beginner like me? Thanks!

Serge with Confidence. You can review it at Amazon.

I, too, have been researching servers to buy, but the research I do, the more confused I become

A friend, who uses her serger for almost all her garment construction, recommended this book:

Singer/Sewing Reference Library" Sewing with an Overlock. The book is out of print, but is available through Amazon. It doesn't compare different servers/overlocks but it does explain through text and really good pictures, what a serger/overlock can do.

I still haven't decided on what serger I am going to buy . . . sometimes I wonder if I really need one.

There's another thread already open on this topic that you might want to read. Right now it's only four items below this one in the list of recent threads.

I agree with Kemish, The Singer Sewing Reference Library -Sewing with an Overlock is the book I refer to the most. You could also check out your local library and see what they have. You can test drive the books, so to speak.

Careful now! That was the book I bought BEFORE I bought my serger, to help me understand what they did. That book is excellent with lots of photos that are very well-taken.

I'm a lot more confident on my serger than on my sewing machine. I use it for almost all construction projects, and spend time figuring out how to use it when instructions call for my SM. I have 3 sergers and will try darned near anything on them.

I also have Kathy Ruddy's 5-DVD series on sergers. They explain the *why* behind everything, not just the 'what knob do I turn.' The hairstyles and fashions in the videos are outdated, but the knowledge about the sergers is still very applicable. I recommend them. (not affiliated)

I've been doing machine embroidery for 12 years, but I'm definitely a beginner at garment sewing.

Serge with Confidence contains patterns and directions. You make things while you are learning about your serger. It fun and inspirational. I got mine from Nancy's Notions.
You might find it at a library.

One way to build your skill level (garment sewers) is to take the scraps after cutting out and use them to serge inside and outside corners and curves. Its a great refresher and lets you hone your skills on various fabric types too.
