Is it just me, or is anyone else outside the US COMPLETELY stumped (and FRUSTRATED) by Club BMV's checkout which requires you to pick a US state, even if you've already chosen a different country???

I had a lengthy email discussion with one of their customer service reps about this within the last year -- because the system USED to work fine (you could put a . or a - or, indeed, the name of a state OUTSIDE the US if your country has them) -- and she seemed quite as puzzled as I was and SUPPOSEDLY talkd to IT about it. But has it been fixed? Nope.

Stop taking my Club BMV membership money if you're not going to let me actually order anything. I think I'm finally done with them.

BMV is so much trouble and I find Simplicity worse. BMV charges an arm and a leg for postage outside the US and Simplicity subcontracts to someone else who charges some hugely ridiculously fee.

I decided to use only indie patterns this year and life has been so much easier. They cost more and so does shipping but I am happier with them when all is said and done.

How annoying. When I'm in that situation with other websites I usually choose a US state from the list and hope that I'll still receive the item based on the other address details (which I always have so far).

I have never ordered patterns from BMV so far because of how much shipping costs (and I'm told it isn't the actual shipping cost as shown on the envelopes). Some companies are so unfriendly to overseas customers. Well, I suppose at least BMV will ship overseas!

I like BMV, but I am in the US. Simplicity, OTOH, is on my pooplist. I ordered some patterns from them a few weeks ago and when the patterns arrived, there was postage due!

I joined BMV a couple of months ago. thought the sales were too good to miss. but the shipping is absolutely insane to new zealand, that it makes it no cheaper at all, sometimes even more expensive.
Now I will buy the majority of patterns from sewingpatterns.com and print them, our local sewing store only carries simplicity, vogue, new look, burda and kwik sew, so if we want butterick or mccalls I have to buy online.

I'm another who will purchase from sewingpatterns.com the postage works out cheaper than club bmv. It usually takes three to four weeks for patterns to arrive and they seem to have frequent sales.

Thanks for your replies, all. I feel ... slightly LOL ... better. I was going to have a batch of patterns sent to my Mom in California and pick them up when I visit her this autumn. Now that I'm feeling a bit less incendiary about it, I'll write BMV's customer service again to complain, but I won't be renewing my membership.

And yes, isn't it galling that they charge more than the actual shipping? I get "handling," but not almost three times what the shipping charges are! In some ways, dealing with BMV feels like dealing with some little mom & pop store that's completely behind the times in technology and attitude.

Thanks again for your responses. :)

I'm a member of Club BMV (based in Switzerland) and I haven't had any trouble with it - the only reason I might not renew my membership is I have been ordering too many patterns! I was able to save my address without any trouble in the beginning and it comes up now automatically when I make an order; the only annoying thing is having to enter my phone number separately each time.

Yes, the shipping charges are excessive, but I think the price of the patterns makes up for it. The most cost effective way is to order seven patterns and pay $25 in shipping - this way each pattern (if it is Butterick or McCalls) is about $5.50 each (versus $7 each if you only purchase 3), and of course the Vogues are a bit more.

I can't beat that price in Switzerland, where craft shops are hard to find and Butterick patterns are sold for at least $19 each. Occasionally I can find an eBay or Etsy seller with cheaper shipping rates than BMV, but the prices of the actual patterns are higher, and the selection just doesn't come close.

I hope you are able to get the problem sorted out - not sure what the pattern shopping situation is like where you are, but for me being part of Club BMV has definitely paid off!

I don't usually purchase things online, but I was desperate. The New Look pattern I wanted was out of print, so I figured I would order a bunch of patterns that were on my wishlist to make my purchase more cost effective. Here is the stupidity that is Simplicity for international orders (note that I am in Canada, which isn't even overseas).

1. The minimum order is $50. I think my initial pattern selection put me at $40, so I had to pick a few extra things that I didn't really want or get charged $50 anyway.

2. For a $53.35 (CAD) order, I was charged $41.37 (CAD) in duties and shipping. Contrast this with a shoe purchase I made the same day for $56.75 (CAD) where the taxes & duties were $16.68 (CAD) and the shipping was $15.59 (CAD).

3. The shoes arrived 4 business days later, while the patterns ended up arriving 3 weeks after I placed my order. The patterns weren't even in a box, they were just cheaply wrapped with brown paper.

4. Once your order is processed (which happened for me in about 8 hours), it cannot be cancelled. Processing an order is not the same as shipping the order, that happens about a week later.

You might be wondering how I discovered all of these things. I placed my order, realized the outrageous shipping costs (I'm fairly confident the costs weren't even listed on the checkout page) and tried to cancel immediately afterwards. On top of that, my order was duplicated. They were confused as to which order I wanted cancelled (I don't know how they could be confused because my reason for cancelling was because of their shipping costs). When I complained that they decided they were going to process and ship my order anyway, all I got was a "too bad" response. I warned them I would be returning the package and doing a charge back on my credit card, but they didn't seem to care. A few weeks after I sent it back, I get an email stating that they're going to send it back to me. I think I've finally got this whole mess sorted out.

The pattern I wanted? I bought it on Etsy from someone in the UK for about $13 and it arrived within 5 days, before Simplicity shipped my order that was supposed to be cancelled.

I had a problem with the Simplicity site last year. Three weeks went by...no patterns. I called...was told one Burda was out of stock. I told them to go ahead & send what they had. Another couple weeks...nothing. I called back & got someone more knowledgable. She told me they have alot of problems with the online site because there are only a couple people working it.
I'm sorry so many people have trouble with BMV. I love them. I hope they can work things out for you. I would definately call them.
