I am waiting for this fabrichttp://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/SMD8897.html for this pattern http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v2607-products-3631.php?page_id=861

I am looking for suggestions from all the experienced sewers. I can take my time making it since it is for my sons wedding next march. Plan to make a muslin to fit. What suggestions do you have for me. What suggestions for lining material?
hope the fabric is as pretty when I get it.
thank you for any suggestions

Gorgeous, classic pattern. My DGF made it up for her daughter a couple of years ago and said it was pretty straightforward, no surprises. I'd check the length of the jacket when you do the muslin and make sure it's flattering. It's easy to add length if needed. The skirt is lovely. Best of luck and congratulations.

I have 3 sons so enjoyed your nick LOL

Will you make the long or the short version, or is that decided yet? Will you need to take off the jacket/top at any stage... might need to consider something else for under the jacket, just in case.

Exciting times!

Sons are fun and never lack for action.
I will wear the long version of the skirt. trying to decide if I should make something for under jacket. will be a March wedding, cathedral for wedding and at the Aquarium for the reception. they said to should not be humid that time of year.

Long version, fabulous!!
I thought of the top as I have a formal jacket/skirt that I wore to a family wedding and I was quite sorry not to have a top 'for it'. A way to take the jacket off and still look dressed in my outfit. I'm normally a cold person so it never even occurred to me I'd want to take off the jacket...

I hope you love the fabric when it arrives, it looks gorgeous!

You don't want the outfit to look less formal if you take off the jacket, like you're just wearing a blouse and skirt. There is a lot of texture and design going on in the fabric so maybe choose a silk satin in the backround color for a top. I can't see a tucked in look at the waist as keeping the dressy style going. So I'd opt for a fitted blouse that stops at the high hip with a side seam zipper. It could be sleeveless or long sleeve, even sheer sleeves or a little flutter cap sleeve. The neckline could be a deep scoop or vee to show case pretty jewelry and look more formal than a tailored neckline. This way it would look like a formal dress with an interesting skirt and complimenting silky bodice. After 50 I started dressing in layers because I was always too hot or too cold-its a great solution to many different situations. This should be as the French say"a gorgeous ensemble" carry

ps - should have said, my wish for a top was to have one with me, available, but not on me! If I needed to take off the jacket I would have then put on the top (found a ladies or such). Not to add bulk or ruin the lines of the outfit.

I had another look at the pattern and you'll need to make welt pockets... have you practised?

I made the jacket of this pattern for a New Year's Eve wedding almost 2 years ago. You're on the right track - MAKE A MUSLIN. I found the jacket to be designed without much wearing ease. I had jumped right in and made the jacket without bothering to do a muslin or checking measurements. It was quite snug and I needed a 'squeezy garment'.

I think with so much metallic thread in this fabric it will be very itchy/scratchy. I would definitely line this outfit. I would line it with a mid-weight silk organza, but I would wait until I get the fabric and see how it feels on the skin. I would take a swatch of the fabric and make sure whatever lining you pick is thick enough or tight enough weave to prevent those metal threads from poking through. It is a lovely pattern and the fabric is beautiful.

thank you for all the good suggestions.
will start looking for an underblouse if it is too warm and therefore could remove the jacket.
will see with the muslin jacket if i will leave the pocket as is or just have a false pocket. have to read the pattern carefully and see.
will keep all posted as i proceed.
