So I found a posting for a less than a year old Bernina 830 and the seller only wants $890 for it. I'm highly skeptical of this price. I don't know much about Bernina's but according to the Bernina website, the MSRP is like $12000 or something crazy like that.

The seller's description is one sentence long and trying to get more info out them is proving to be a challenge.

MY husband is extremely skeptical, especially after seeing the email exchanges.

Any thoughts on this?

Total and very common scam.

I report them every time they pop up on CL, but that's like pulling weeds...more always pop up.

Why Toronto? Live near here and we get as many scam ads on CL but don't think Toronto is especially noted for being a starting point!

Thanks ladies! Definitely a scam! The seller ships from Florida. It was advertised on Pittsburgh CL. I've flagged it.

I don't see any reason to flag Canada.

This can happen anywhere....and it does.

If I can not see it and try it, then I don't want it!

We had a rash of those TOL listings here.. when you would reply you wished to look at the machine in person. they would respond they had moved to Toronto.. and needed a Western Union etc etc and then they would ship it.. I always wondered why they would state Toronto too.. and can only guess that maybe they were trying to discourage one from complaining if they fell for that scam by making them think it was just too bad since the scammer lived out of the country.
I followed those listings for months. then for a while they totally disappeared here.. with stern warnings from CL about those listings specifically..
Who knows where they really live as you can pick up a WU money order from anywhere you are at.. I do think they had a real purpose behind stating they were in Toronto.. as you know even a person who is not aware of these scams would think twice before sending money to say.. China or the Philippines etc.. But Canada seems safe enough as I know most of us trust Canadians..

Yes, I think the point of scammers using Toronto is either that it's the anti-Nigeria (meaning that one is suspicious of business deals involving Nigeria, but somehow Toronto puts one at ease) and/or that it's just outside the US, so while not raising alarm bells, the scam victim runs into a speed bump, if you will, when trying to resolve the scam.

I once responded to a scam ad, just to see what they'd say. It was "I'm working on a cruise line, but the machine is at a Costco (or was it Sam's Club?) in Toronto, and they will ship it to you." I said that I go to Toronto all the time, so I could go there, test drive it, and then get cash to pay. Of course, nothing after that.

there is someone posting TOL machines, plus other TOL items like commercial printers, mowers, etc., on eBay with a low starting bid and a buy it now for $2500.00. the ads are all identical, same wording, same fonts, same lay out, etc... different seller names and locations. 0 feedback. when i asked if i could come test the machine, they never responded and the posting vanished. but an identical posting soon appeared. different machine.
