Has anyone prewashed their hand washable knits in the machine on the delicate setting with good results? I just purchased some gorgeous ivory with gold lurex sweater knit called diamond sun from gorgeous fabrics. Before I sew it up I should hand wash it in cold water and roll it in bath towels to get out the excess water, and lay flat to dry. But if I could would prefer to just machine wash and then lay it out to dry Or, what do you think of omitting the prewashing, just sew it up and then hand wash in cold water when it needs to be cleaned?

I confess I put all my fabrics in the washing machine and dryer on appropriate cycles. If I am truly doubtful if the fabric is going to mostly survive such a trip I cut a swatch about 3"x3" that I first place on a paper and draw the outline of then put it in a lingerie washing bag to go through the cycles. When it comes out I place it on the paper outline to see how much it shrank or changed shape.
