I have been sewing happily along, almost daily and at least 4-5 days/week, since January. I had yet to do any cleaning or maintenance on my machine.

Tuesday morning, while trying to get in my 15 - 20 minutes of sewing, my machine clunked at me. I removed my fabric and bobbin, rethreaded it and tried again. Clunk.

When I removed the bobbin the second time, CLUNK! and the bobbin holder popped out! Well, there was LOADS of dust and debris down there! Oops

I went upstairs with a very sad face, thinking it'd have to go away for service or worse -- be broken! By the time I got home my husband had cleaned it up (it's spotless!) and it's sewing quietly and smoothly again.

The moral -- don't neglect your cleaning and oiling!!! :-)

P.S. - I am VERY good about changing needles often. I read it early on -- and it stuck -- sewing machine needles are cheaper than sewing machine maintenance!

I vacuum out my machines 2 to 3 times per week on a regular basis -- sometimes daily depending on the fabric that is being used.

It's amazing how fast dust and lint can build up around the feed dogs and underneath the bobbin. And when I'm working with glitter or sequin fabric, it can be a real mess.

The mini vacuum attachments have been a real find and make the cleaning job much, much easier (I got mine through Nancy's Notions and they work great with my Dyson).

He's the best!

He said, "I will fix it as soon as I come home. I won't eat or watch tv or anything. I'll go straight down there and fix it"

He's of the "happy wife, happy life" camp! Ooh. I just may bake him some cookies for his efforts!

After this near heart attack inducing episode, I will be MUCH better about keeping it clean.

I think we all learn this one the hard way. I now have a habit of cleaning out the bobbin area every time I finish a garment. Some fabrics make an amazing amount of fuzz. Glad you are changing those needles!

A good lesson to share! I am not as good as I should be about this. I've been lucky so far but if I don't behave it will probably bite me.

A batch of cookies seems like a great idea. Particularly since you get to have a couple also.

Get the tiny vac attachments and go to it!They are great - no canned air BTW. Clean clean clean...:)))) And get it serviced anyway because what you cannot see or get to is probably as bad inside the machine!

I've been more or less diligent about cleaning and oiling my machine. Usually before starting a new project or every couple weeks (I don't sew very frequently), whichever happens first.
