I have one on my counter and wondering if it takes more energy than it is worth to clean it. Dishwasher alone won't do it and the label is miserable to get off. Confession time. Sometimes I just toss them.

We eat lots of Adams peanut butter in glass jars. The labels soak off easily and I fill the jar with hot water and detergent, give it a shake, then let it sit overnight. the nest day I give it another shake, turn it upside down and leave it over night again. Next it goes through the dishwasher and comes out clean.

Might be time for a new dishwasher? I run our peanut butter jars through the DW and they come out fine.

If one has to think about it too much, one can toss it.

Michelle - see, this is what I mean. It isn't the level of difficulty so much as it is a multi stage, multi day process. It has been on the counter long enough for me to have done the whole thing, but there it sits. Mocking me!

And yes, I probably do need a new DW. I have been whining about this one for a very long time, in spite of the fact that it is the best one I have ever owned. It is the last appliance in this kitchen that hasn't been replaced and in fact we are on our second fridge!

our dishwasher cleans ours adequately. I recycle a lot of cat food cans, and realized not too long ago that I was going way beyond what was necessary to clean them, almost as if someone might eat out of them! Now I just give them a good rinse, get the obvious chunks of food out, and call it good...

katy - good info! Our regional recycling program specifies that everything be reasonably clean to avoid critters. It took ages for them to start accepting pizza boxes - pretty much coinciding with the time our teens became grown-ups and moved out of the house, of course. We haven't had pizza boxes here for years now.

We have started to be able to put milk cartons in our blue box recently and my hall cupboard has been the recipient of at least one improperly rinsed carton. Yuck! So inside the house, the smell would not be nice, in the garage there is concern over rodents and out on the street, racoons.

I typically take labels off of tins but not glass or plastic. Not sure why, but I suspect it had something to do with the rules from when we first started to recycle.

ETA - the PB jar is now in phase one - soaking with hot water and dish soap.
