Quilt borders different size at top and bottom
What to you think? OK to have borders different widths?

So, I did a jelly roll race quilt using 3 jelly rolls because I wanted it to be large enough for my king size bed. It isn't quite wide enough to overhang the mattress, so I added a border. By adding the border the same width on all 4 sides, it is way too long now (long enough to fold over a pillow like a bedspread).

I have read online that the quilt police will not come to take me away if I cut the top and bottom borders shorter, but I would love to hear what PR folks think. I am now wondering if I just take off the top border since it would be under the pillows anyway and leave the rest all the same size

Personally, I'm not super keen on the idea of mismatched, but it might be what I need to do to make this work.

it doesn't matter what type of sewing you do. you are sewing, and sewing is good.

You just have to decide what is going to bug you the most, having to fold the top to fit the bed or having the borders uneven.

I think having 3 sides bordered but leave the top without one will look fine!

Thanks, Cat. I think you are probably right. The top would be covered by pillows anyway, so I won't even really see it. :)

This is my winter quilt. I am going to use warm n natural batting in it, so at least I have some time to get it done before it gets chilly out. My warm weather quilt has a layer of flannel instead of normal batting because my tempurpedic mattress sleeps really warm!

If you make uneven borders, you are in good company. Barbara Brackman had a post on uneven borders a while back uneven borders

Some may have been on purpose, such as you are thinking of doing, and some may have been mending to keep using an old quilt.

Unless you plan to enter the quilt into a national show, I say do what works best for your situation.

The top border is folded over like I removed it.

This one is what it would look like along the top edge.

Sorry the pics aren't great. I have a headache, so I evidently can't get my brain or my phone's camera to focus!

I just want to get this thing figured out because I have been sitting on it since I did the race part last October while I was visiting my parents, so thanks to everybody for their input! . :)
