I went to the garment district looking for some white strech cotton for a button down... And I found cotton sateen? Unfortunately not in white...is there another type if fabric I can search for...or I want a good source for plain white. Places like fabric mart have a strech poplin but never in colors I am interested in..

Broadcloth, oxfordcloth, and poplin are the usual fabrics for shirts. I do not know if any of them come in lycra blends, but if they do, they'll be in the garment district. You could ask a salesperson to show you their shirtings, and see what they have.

You might try Vogue (voguefabricsstore.com). I've gotten stretch cotton sateen in many colors at their store, but what they have is always different, and it seems like their online offerings are sometimes different from what's in the store. Right now I found bone and ivory colored stretch shirting, which is a bit different from what you're looking for, but if you keep checking or call, you might find white. Good luck! It seems like sometimes quality basics are the hardest to find.

Sateen's a little heavy for a shirt, IMO. I'd look for "stretch shirting" or "stretch poplin". You might also consider lawn or voile if you'll have warm weather for a while.

cotton 98% with 2% spandex is also known as cotton sateen. Try JoAnns Fabrics or Gertie's etsy shop. Good luck!

If you are still looking, I know of a nice cotton sateen in white (lightweight and pretty drapey, like the finest men's shirt) but without stretch. I saw it in person and it was online too but I can't find the link. Let me know if you think you are interested.
