Import 3-letter monogram design via USB?

I am such a beginner that I have NEVER done any machine embroidery & don't ever yet own an embroidery machine! Am thinking of ordering the Brother PE770 b/c of the 5X7 field. Leary of ordering online but we live in a small town w/no dealers, and this model can be ordered thru walmart.com which gives me some peace of mind b/c I know how good they are about returns in the unlikely event that it doesn't work on arrival, and I could return it to a local Walmart store to avoid hassle of shipping it back.

I don't care anything about all the flower designs, etc that come w/the machine. My sole reason for purchasing is to be able to put names and monograms on my girls' things. I know it comes w/alphabet which I presume I could use for a whole name.

But I also want to do the intertwining 3-letter monogram with the LARGER CENTER letter. I have heard of buying embird or monogram wizard, etc but I am not computer savvy and am afraid of the learning curve and the cost. Is it possible for me to buy a specfic design with my daughter's monogram off someone on, for example, ebay or etsy, and download it via the USB directly to the machine? (I think there are people who digitize and sell the design for download, no??) I realize I would be limited to that particular design and those particular letters, but I guess I could buy several designs and just put them on or take them off the USB as needed if I save it on my computer. Has anyone done this & knows it works? THANKS!!

After a few of these specific designs you will have the cost of basic Embird. It is not difficult to learn, and there are many tutorials. You can start with a trial before you decide to make a purchase.

Link to Embird.

Thank you, PattiAnn. Do you use embird with a Brother embroidery machine? And do you recommend embird over monogram wizard or the many other monogram programs out there?

Lastly, I just now saw where Mrs Moos posted that Costco was clearancing out these pe770 machines for under $300 but that was over a week ago and of course there are none left. I wonder if the USB part or some of the technology on this machine may be getting older/becoming obsolete. Your thoughts on that? I just want to do names and monograms and am not a person who has to have the latest of everything, but I don't want to pay $560 for a machine that may be on its way out just b/c it could become hard to use or to find designs or things that are compatible with it....THANKS!!

Timely question! I have the same machine and was looking at the monograms on Etsy to purchase for my DDs. I'm not computer savvy either so I look forward to more replies. I bought my machine from Amazon for $500 and it was so easy to learn how to use. Thanks for posting your question!

I do not do monograms as I personally do not like them as well as putting the person's name on their items.

I have Designer's Gallery and Letterworks, which is a plug-in as it will not work alone.

The brand of embroidery machine does not matter when selecting software.

I recommend Embird because it is popular with many ME enthusiasts and it has a tutorial.

If you want a stand alone program for fonts, make sure you can import and not be saddled with only what the software offers.

AND, USB is the most current method of transfer without spending a lot of money. There is a machine brand that has a wireless method of transferring, but the USB is so much easier than having to use a reader/writer/memory card and holds only a very few designs and then is overwritten when you want to add new designs.

Just try out different software trials before you buy to see which one you like. some are pricier but you may like the feature over another which is why they offer free trials so you don't buy and then regret or so you can see what extras you are paying for versus a cheap software. After my first purchase before trying I am a firm believer of trying before buying.

Some of the designs on etsy are under $3 for a custom download of a 3-letter monogram. I wonder if I would be better off to buy one of those, download it to the usb, and practice with that before even trying the learning curve of additional software? What do you experienced ladies think????

Go for it. Then try the built-ins provided with your embroidery machine.

Don't be afraid of getting your feet wet...try as many trials as you can find.

I purchased my Brother PE770 from Walmart and love it. I also down load designs from different internet sites. I have not purchased a program for designing. It does have lettering and they print out nicely. I can say for the price it is a great machine. I can't say I don't want a better machine, because someday I do, but for now it meets my needs. You can return to Walmart store even if you order on line with no problem.

Subject: Satin Stitch on Bernina 1090 Date: 9/16/13 9:33 PM

Hi Smockeymama! I am a new member and found your post from 2009 in which you wrote "My Bernina 1090 does a very beautiful satin stitch." I am wondering if you can tell me how to set my machine to make a satin stitch for applique? Thank you!
