I have an opportunity to buy a Juki 8500, including extra feet(teflon, zippers, velvet) and a load of bobbins, table and motor. It appears to be is excellent shape and in good working working condition.

Any reviews? Anyone have an idea of what the price would have been new? I can't find the price to gauge a used price.

Thanks for your time.

That machine is used a lot in the garment industry. It is great for sewing clothing. It doesn't have a walking foot and is not made for heavy duty sewing at all. However, it sews a great straight lockstitch.

Not knowing if it has a servo motor or not I personally wouldn't pay over $500 of it.

Thanks for the reply.

I did not think to ask what kind of motor it had, just that it had one and it was working.

Would denim be too heavy for it? I largely want it for tote bags(denim or light-mid weight canvas), re-working jeans for me and some topstitching of items I make(like diapers) that get tough with a domestic machine.

This is a good, solid machine you won't regret buying. It has a clutch motor so new, it sold for about $1300.

Being that it is a fairly new machine, it won't depreciate much so you may expect to pay close to that ($1000 +/-).

A brand new 8700 (which is the current production model) can be had brand new for less than $1000, with a servo motor. No automation, just the mechanical head.

I use one at work and like others have said it is a fine machine. It is a midweight so not designed for heavy work but I have often used it for denim and cordura witha 90 needle. It has a harder time with heavy canvas plus webbing but will do it. Great with nylon, cotton and outdoor fabrics.
One thing you will like is the large area to work with...the harp area. This machine is simple in that it does only strait stitch but it does it well andis quite reliable. You will love the power and speed.

Sorry I didn't respond to your question earlier.

For $300 I'd be all over it. It looks like a great machine.

If it has a clutch motor then you will probably want to upgrade to a servo motor when you get the $. If it already has a servo motor then you got one heck of a deal + 1. Either way congratulations!
