I created this new thread - the name sounds a bit like an underwear sewalong but I couldn't think of anything better.

Subject: Anyone going to the Craft and Quilt Fair in Sydney Date: 6/17/05 11:37 PM

I received my free ticket in the mail to the craft and quilt fair next week at Darling Harbour, so I'm going to have to take a day's annual leave to attend, aren't I.

I was going to ask a friend to go with me but she doesn't sew so I'd probably annoy her by dawdling. I'm looking forward to just taking my time and seeing everything on offer. I'll try not to buy too much. Am still looking at overlockers - started with the Husqvarna 936, then went off it and thought maybe a Janome , then went off that, and thought, no I'll stick to Bernina! , then got interested in Pfaff , and now I'm thinking of the Husqvarna again. My star sign is Libra and this is pretty obvious by all this indecision.

A (quilting) friend and I are going on Saturday and Sunday - our wild weekend away in the 'Big Smoke'! I haven't been before so I don't really know what to expect but the Quilt Show will be the main attraction!!
We also plan to attend the SCQuilters dinner on Saturday night.

I like the new thread title - it reminds me of a very rude joke though!

I spent some time today looking at a possible replacement for my sewing machine, which is starting to show it's age. I was astonished to find that $400 would get me a Brother BC 2500, which is described as being ideal for beginners, but is considerably more fancy than my current machine! It has a few decorative stitches, which I want, but the most important feature is that it does keyhole buttonholes, which I really really want. At some stage I hope to get a really whizz-bang embroidery capable machine, but this looks like a promising basic for the time being. There are no reviews of that model here, and a Google search didn't turn up very much either, so it'd be a bit of a blind purchase. Still, $400 for a machine isn't bad at all.

Hi from Taranaki, NZ
I got as far as getting out the last Burda (March) to cut out a top today. I then looked closer at the pattern and saw that it is almost a raglan sleeve - not sure if that is the most flattering style for me with a FBA. Might go down to spotlight tomorrow and buy some cheap knit to try it on before cutting into my $25 per metre fabric

Judy, having a machine that does easy buttonholes (cloned) is a big bonus. $400 is a fair price for a good basic machine.
I haven't looked at Janome in that price range, but they would be worth a look too. Any machine is an investment that you will reap the rewards of..specially as you sew many beautiful garments. I always enjoy your reviews.
I hope you get to treat yourself soon

Artkat, I didnt get any sewing done today either..went to see Madagascar though..a thoroughly funny movie, for both adults and children.

I too like the new thread..I always enjoy reading what's happenning with members Downunder, what you are working on etc.

Any news on the Allanah Hill address? I am preparing to send my daughter on a little shopping spree there over xmas, when she visits Melbourne..lucky duck..I will be dogsitting.

Hi, from the Wairarapa.
This thread is a great idea.
Judy, a machine for only $400.00 is not going to last. The two people I know that brought a Brother were trying to sell them six mouths later.

Hi Judy, Looking for a new machine is such a big job. I would look at the Janomes in that price range and trial them I have to say that my neighbour who sews alot got a Brother machine she particularly wanted the automatic button holes etc she was very disappointed and had replaced it 8 months later. She was disappointed in the consistency of a good stitch and fact she had difficulty getting it to twin needle with a nice stitch and the button holes were passable in her opinion but it drove her nuts. She got an ELna 6003- mainly because there was a really good deal going. She still has her elderly Bernina as well.
Having said that I was in the local SM shop and he had avery young 2nd hand Pfaff machine that had been traded to get the TOL embroidery machine - it looked like it had hardly been out of it's box.
Happy hunting

Hi from Mt Maunganui, New Zealand
My son is visiting from Sydney so I haven't had much time to check out PR but I am thrilled to rad about this thread. Thanks Mel J. I am looking forward to getting back to routine next week. Although I will really miss him when he goes I miss my sewing and PR when I have visitors. Catch 22.
Maggie
