So I was doing a rolled hem on a knit hoodie, and for the most part, it was perfect-exactly how I wanted it to look. Then while still constructing the garment, I realized there were two or three 1/4 1/2 inch parts where the rolled hem didn't grab onto the fabric (or it did and had fallen off). In all other parts it grabbed on securely.

I trimmed enough fabric off while serging. I also know I had an even feed throughout.

So, what is the problem? The knit wasn't super stretchy at all, more of a moderate knit.

Because my rolled hem wasn't holding perfectly, I just did a 3 thread wide wrap serge for the rest of the exposed seams, which was nice, but not what I want for my second attempt.

Increase the cutting width to a higher number to leave more fabric within the seam allowance. Chech if a smaller size needle would work.

Also try a longer stitch.

I thought the knife was supposed to be disengaged when doing a rolled hem. Per my serger's instructions, I never use the knife and haven't experienced the hem falling off.

That's a good suggestion--if I increase fabric in hem by moving my knife over, it will have more to grab on to.

My stitch length was set pretty small-between 1 and 1.5
I don't want it too picot-y. I could try 1.5-2 though. That's helpful.

I never disengage my knife even on laddering I just use a foot that allows me to stay away from my fabric enough not to cut. I'm too afraid I will forget to RE-engage!! Seems just like something I would do! Plus, them hem allowance was 5/8 so I did want to cut off a fair amount. Is the cutting a problem? I have a pfaff Hobbylock 4Xxx somethingand an elna 4

My next fabric is even stretchier-so I'm worried it will be worse? Is it something about when the serger hits the bias? Would stay stitching help?

Are you using wooly nylon thread?

I was not, thought it might be too bulky?

On fine fabrics like organza, I have had to stiffen the fabric to get a rolled hem to "hold" sometimes. Same fabric, different colour worked without stiffening. Weird. I used watered down white glue, which flaked off when I handled it after sewing.

I have had two sergers and to do a rolled hem the knife is not engaged. I think that could be your problem. What does your manual say about the settings for a rolled hem?
