Hi All,

I am new here and new to embroidery. I just purchased the brother PE 500. I hope someone knows about this machine. The preloaded designs are fine but not what I'm looking for. I purchased and downloaded from emblibrary.com. When trying to open it, it says can not open file. PES is not being recognized on my computer. I have searched the Brother website for software downloads or CD rom for installation but there doesn't seem to be any. Can any one here help me?

Thank you,
Barb

You will need some kind of embroidery software to open an embroidery file on your computer. I happen to have Bernina Artista software which will read a variety of embroidery file types. I have the complete designer version and it was very expensive. I have had it a while and have done some updates as they came out. I don't know what it would cost now but the designer version probably is close to $2000. I bought a Brother brand PED Basic (just a basic editing software) and got a card and writer unit with it two years ago when I bought my 780D embroidery machine. The total package was a little over $100. I was going to buy a Brother card for my Magic Box but it was $100 and the lady suggested I get this. Good thing!!! My computer died, and the Magic Box won't work with the new computer, but that little Brother PED Basic package will. Check with your Brother dealer - that $100 was not bad, in my opinion. Also, there are some other software programs out there that aren't as pricey. I am not familiar personally, but a lot of folks have use one called Embird. Check into them to see what all they do, what files they read and write, and of course, price. Hope this helps a bit.

Hi, Your computer won't "read" embroidery files, but they will download to your computer. Usually, you will either get a number for a title of a design or the file will have a title like, apples.pes. If you want to see what you will be stitching out on the computer, you need a program that will open it on the computer for you. There are some free programs that will do that, but I am not familiar with those. I have embird with the icon plug-ins that I have purchased. I can see all of my embroidery designs through my Embird program which also allows me to see them through my windows explorer program in my computer. Harriet

Like Harriet said you can still transfer .pes to your file manager and then send it to the sewing machine or thumbdrive, depending on how you get a design to your machine. Once your machine has the file you can open and stitch like your machine normally would do. I googled free .pes viewers and this is what popped up. I also use and love embird but for just viewing there are many freebies you can install

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your help. Yes, I downloaded the SewWhat pro software. I am up and running. (Sorry have been away from it for a bit) I have another question that pertains to this machine but not to this particular subject. When you put the fabric and stabilizer into the hoop and then hoop into the machine, which direction does it automatically embroider in relation to the frame guide tabs. I want to embroider a sweatshirt but I don't know which way to put the hoop on the fabric. Should the guide tabs be at the neck opening? I am using the large hoop, the screen shows my design stretching across the longer side of hoop, which is what I want. So will it embroider in the right direction?
I hope that makes sense.

Thanks again,
Barb

ok, I let it start for a few stitches and it is not in the correct direction. There is nothing in the instruction booklet that tells you which way it will embroider. I have to rehoop now to change direction/layout, but that's not good! Its hard to hoop, and get it straight! Frustrating! Thank goodness this is an old sweatshirt that I'm practicing on first. It seems to embroider in the direction as you were looking at it on the screen, so it would be perpendicular to the "embroidery unit". I guess my design is too big to use the screen tools to rotate it without re-hooping. (in case some one else has this issue)
REVISED: I did not have to rehoop, once I deleted design that was already in progress I could then use the on screen tools and rotate the design 90 degrees. It is now going in the correct direction. NO REHOOPING THANK GOODNESS.
