In my never ending quest to save money, I am considering "divorcing" Verizon-especially after my son upgraded to a Iphone 5 after TWO Verizon employees assured us that based on our prior usage, he would not need more than 2 GB of data. (I have old unlimited everything family plan-when he upgraded he had to go to 2 GB data) Well, he can't seem to keep the thing within the 2GB-he has tried to stay on wifi as much as possible but still goes over. After asking at Verizon what we could do to stop this, we were told "Oh the Iphone 5 uses more data>" No one told us this before we upgraded.
So I am considering other carriers. My 2 kids use the Iphones-daughter the 4s and son the 5. I use an LG Intuition which I love. I keep seeing these Straight Talk Unlimited plans for $45 a month. For all of us, that would save me about $140 at least per month.
I know Straight Talk has the Iphones but I don't see where they have a "Phablet" like my Intuition or even the Galaxy Note 2. I have read where you can bring your own "unlocked phone" but wonder how successful this is.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

we're AT&T folks.... but hubby has an iphone 5 and doesn't seem to use all that much data, he too has a 2G plan. Have him check his setting and see if he has programs running in the background that use date anytime they run. Streaming music, watching videos and tv use alot of data. Ask him if he's doing any of those when he's not using the wifi.

My daughter was told the same thing by Verizon that her phone would not need more than 2 GB of data when she upgraded...then the high overage charges started every month...and she also has wifi...so it's a mystery that she can't get Verizon to explain. Seems fishy to me. She's only 6 months into a 2 year contract...so she's stuck for another 18 months.

I just switched from Verizon to Straight Talk. I purchased an unlocked AT&T iphone 4 from ebay, because it was less expensive than a 5 and I was using a 4 with Verizon. You have to order a micro sim card from Straight Talk and a monthly service card to activate it. I kept my old Verizon phone number when I switched. I've only had it for a week, but so far it's working fine.

I have read that although Straight Talk advertises unlimited talk, text and data, they will slow down or "throttle" data speeds of users who use "excessive" data. They don't advertise this or tell you what "excessive" is, it just happens. The plus, in my opinion, is that at least you don't get shocked with a huge bill at the end of the month for going over.

I have a Nokia E71 that was bought through them that they unlocked.

I have moved my card into other unlocked phones and they worked fine with it.

I hear you! This just started when we upgraded in May. I can't believe they get by with doing this! I called and asked at least 3 times about the data usage and was told that "it would be fine-he wasn't even close to 2GB each month" before the Iphone 5. I think I may go down to the Verizon store and pitch a really LOUD fit about their "upgrade limitation" ---But first I am going to post on the local Craigslist to see who else if any has had this problem.
In the meantime, I really want to explore getting either the phone I have (LG Intuition "phablet") or other large smartphone on the Straight Talk. My kids like their Iphones-I want BIG with BIG texting! We used my phone this weekend Aat the local quilt show with the "Square" from my work. That big ol' screen was nice to have!
So anyone know of a big smartphone such as the Samsung Note 2 or??? that can be used with Staight Talk?

Mrs. Moos, I emailed the CEO after being misinformed a few years ago and then enduring high data charges. His assistant called me back and informed that I was **wrong**. Just **wrong**. My data plan was truly unlimited. Despite the fact that I was being charged for overages. I despise Verizon, but there hasn't been an alternative that DH will accept. They have abysmal customer service ratings but good coverage.

This is a no brainer to me.. I would go for a cheaper plan. but I see you have concerns other than the money involved.. Wish I could help.. but pigs don't have cell phones, no reception on the farm.. However.. I will def bookmark this thread and run it past my DS as I know he knows all about all these cell phones and such..
Frankly if I could I would jerk out my landline too..

Its a pity you can't trust the companies you rely on anymore. whether a dealer or a phone company.. You simply have to be on guard and read all the fine print etc etc etc.
