Hi!
After falling in love with vintage Bernina, I found a deal I couldn't pass up: an Artista 730 for 475$. The man selling it was aware it was worth more, but it was his ex-wife sewing machine, that he had kept for several years hoping she would come back, but she didn't and finally passed away. It was just something he wanted to get rid as soon as possible (he may have got this low price from a sewing machine shop, I think, but I kept this idea for myself). I played with it for an hour and found it was in excellent condition, so I grabbed it.
Now I have a few questions:

1)The machine doesn't come with an embroidery unit; is it normal? Was it something you had to buy as an add-on?
2) There is an embroidery unit for an Artista 200E that is available on ebay for a good price; would it be compatible with the 730? Would I need anything else to make it works (a software?)...I was quote 1200$ for a new compatible embroidery unit by my Bernina dealer. For this price, I will keep my Brother PE-770 (cost me 500$). But I would like to downsize my herd of sewing machine... space is getting sparse :-)
3) I noticed the screen is not very responsive. I have found the place where you can set the sensitivity of the screen and decreased it to 35% and it`s much better. But could it be an issue on the long run and should I have it check?

It depends on what you mean by not very responsive. The windows operating system is a bit slower. Since the machine sat for a few years, I would have it looked at by a reputable dealer that has an excellent tech. A good internal cleaning and making sure everything is working would give peace of mind.

Not sure about the module question.

My Artista 730E came with the embroidery module.
But, for the price you paid . . .
I do not know what the going price is for a new emb. module. $1,200 might be high or it might be spot on. Personally, I think that is high if it is a local dealer. They would make a lot of money from you in the long run, when you attend classes, buy needles, stabilizers, designs, etc.

Best to find a Bernina dealer (you can, through the Bernina.com web site) and ask about the 200 emb. module working on the 730E. I think it will, but I cannot guarantee you that I am correct.

Software is always a good idea. I think there is a basic free version on the Bernina web site called Art Design or Art Link or something like that.

The Windows OS is slooooowww. Is that what you mean by "responsive"? or just the sensitivity to touch?

ETA --- definitely take it in to a certified Bernina technician and have it serviced. The lubrication inside can gunk up on any machine that has been sitting for a few years. (would you drive a car that has been stored for the same number of years, or would you change the oil first?) Basic service should run anywhere from $100 to $125, depending on the area market. YMMV

Ok, I called another Bernina dealer (the nearest one is really not good at all). I spoke to a nice lady who told me to call her again in a few minutes so she could get the info. I learn a few things:
-the embroidery unit was not coming automatically (at least here in Canada) so it`s possible the previous owner didn't bought it
-Bernina is still making embroidery unit for the 730... but it would be 999$. I may take a chance in buying the 200 unit if I can get it for 100-200$. I would be worth the try.
