I mostly buy locally (Colorado Fabrics, formerly Denver Fabrics) or from Fabric Mart and occasionally from FFC/Denver Farbrics online. But I was having issues getting the palette I wanted from my regular sources so tried fabric.com.

Most of the order came fine, though I understand why they sell a 37" yard -- they don't cut straight. I ordered only knits, so the piece of candy-purple cotton twill upholstery was a surprise, but I understand that errors happen in the warehouse. It should have been caught (because there's no way that black/cream butterfly stretch knit bears any resemblance to candy-purple and white cotton twill) but these things happen. So I sent the wrong stuff back, they sent out the replacement, and the fact that they sent UPS to my door for the pickup was a nice gesture.

Then the replacement arrived and it was the exact same candy-purple cotton twill. That tells me they have an inventory control database error and poor training in the warehouse. After all, at least three people handled the order -- someone picked it, someone cut it, someone packed and checked off the pack list. All three of those people should have been checking the item in their hands against the item description. The item numbers were in no way similar, so it wasn't a case of twice misreading. It tells me that maintaining quota is more important to the employees than quality -- which says that their working environment is at least dysfunctional, if not abusive. That piece of industrial psychology goes back at least to the automotive factories and the difference between Detroit and Tokyo in the 70s and 80s. That's a big warning of likely poor morale.

And now... Out of stock.

I'll stick with fabric mart.

I haven't ever ordered from fabric.com and based on this review and many others just like it, I don't think I will ever order from them.

It's strange, because I think I read that Amazon took them over and I've never had a problem with Amazon, in fact they are awesome! Wonder why they can't implement their techniques into this place?? Unless I have my info wrong, which is highly possible.

I will stick to fabricmart.com as well as I like their stuff and have never had a mistake from them either!

Thanks for sharing!

I think the problems started when the founder and president Stephen Friedman (sp?) left a year or so after they were acquired by amazon. I am sure he was a great leader , and it showed.

There is a correlation. Nominally, he stayed on as 'manager' or something, but having been a very happy customer of his before the sale, I'd have to say that the decline in quality and service was evident almost at once.

I have never had a problem with Fabric.com and I have ordered from them for years. That said, I have read reviews from unhappy customers and have made a list of other online fabric stores I would like to try just for a possible better selection. Maybe I have just been lucky?

I was very lucky before but this week received an order for someone else instead of mine (some Liberty of London on clearance, something I *really* wanted). I'm done with them, too many other alternatives out there who don't make as many mistakes.

I have ordered a lot from them in the last year or 2 and have never had the slightest problem. Everything I've purchased has come promptly, the right item, properly cut and as represented. So sorry to hear of so many problems. I do use other online companies also and have never had an issue with any of them. Maybe my luck will run out soon!

Fabric.com is great for fleece, but I too have experienced some issues as well. Ordered some cotton gingham that did not have a fluid hand, as it should. It was coated with a strange sizing. I have been impressed with Vogue Fabrics. My orders arrive in a sturdy box, rather than in a tattered plastic mailer (as most things do now days).

I ordered once from Fabric.com. One of the pieces of I ordered was for a pale pink knit. I received the correct fabric but it was in 2 pieces. How was I supposed to make my pattern fit to pieces?
Shortly after that I started reading comments from others and decided to remove them from my list. I didn't send it back (should have) and just edited my pattern to make it work but I won't use them again.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with fabric.com. I've ordered from them on several different occasions, and never been disappointed.

One time I had ordered something and they were out of stock on that particular item, I received a call from them and they asked if they could send something similar or would I just want a credit. I chose something similar and received the item (very close to the original) within a few days.

I've always been very pleased with their service and the items I've ordered. Try calling them and speaking directly with someone -- maybe you could pin them down that way.
