Have any of you had calls claiming the caller is from Microsoft Support? They claim to have reports from my computer that unwanted code is entering my computer without my knowledge. I have sent no reports to Microsoft.
I asked for an address and he gave a real address, but said with a heavy accent that his name was Edward William.

I am brushing it off as some kind of scam, but have any of you ever heard of this kind of reaching out to consumers from Microsoft?

It is a scam. They get you to start giving out personal information and control of your computer. You did great in not giving them any info.

It's social engineering. The people on the other end of the phone line want your money, and are willing to lie, cheat, and scam to get it.

Microsoft's calling? Beware of this scam

Incidentally, if you're still running XP, Microsoft will not support your software. By analyzing the patches MS releases for Vista, Seven and Eight, crooks may be able to write code that specifically targets old bugs left in "XP". But that's a separate issue.

What ever happened to the National Do Not Call Registary? If you register, only those with whom YOU choose to do business with can call you. The others can be reported. Not sure of the ramifications.

Yeah, "James" called me last week. His accent was so heavy it took three repeats before I realized he was calling from the Microsoft SCAM place... :D

It does not work. I get calls all the time from organizations I've never done business with.

I haven't had one in several months but was getting a lot of these calls for a while, I'm in Ireland, so they must be international, whoever's doing it. Mine also had heavy accents. What a pest they were.
First, as soon as they'd start their spiel I'd say 'I don't have a computer' and hang up. Eventually I just hung up.
Shake and repeat, the calling went on for several months, not always daily but many calls a week.

My mother in law got a call for computer repairs the other day. The caller INSISTED my mother in law needed repairs on her computer and she firmly (because Mum is in every way a lady) informed them that they would have a very difficult time repairing a computer she didn't have. Mum hasn't ever and never will get a computer. I don't think she'd enjoy it.

Exact same thing at my Dad's. no computer in that house - I let him argue with me for a while but at the end the only way to get off was to hang up on him.

SCAM SCAM SCAM!! Unfortunately, my very naive MIL fell for it a couple of years ago. It was a hassle to clean up.
