My machine makes decent buttonholes. But they look pretty crap on this ponte. :/

Is the area under the buttonhole interfaced? If you're using a knit interfacing, is it oriented so that the stretchy direction isn't in the same direction as the buttonhole? Have you tried water soluble stabilizer under and/or over the buttonhole?

I use interfacing, but permanent fusible interfacing in between the two layers of your fashion fabric. Water soluble interfacing will dissolve in washing and leave your buttonholes wimpy! If you are out of interfacing, organza or another stiff fabric will do. You want to permanently support those buttonholes on knits.

No new advice to add. Stabilizing is definitely needed. I am curious about what you are sewing that you need a button hole on a knit like ponte. If it doesn't need it but you want the look if a button you can make a fake one.

So far, I made them but didn't cut them openso I'll do the stabilizing step since I have slip stitched the facing to the jacket (it's unlined).

And THANK YOU for the help!

It sounds like you have solved this now but I thought I would add that it might help if you can change the density of the buttonhole. My sm has a specialized buttonhole for knits that is much less dense the standard buttonhole. If you can adjust yours, it might help.

I have to admit that when it comes to knit jackets I sometimes take the easy way out and just use the snaps from Snap Source.
