Subject: Patterns you are using Date: 10/29/13 2:34 PM

Hi Sarah,

I was looking at your "Expert Sewing Techniques for Jackets" video class and I was wondering if you would tell me what the pattern is that you used for the Jacket on the picture and on the video... and on the one you are wearing at the top of this page... I would like to take your class, but would also like to sew the jackets you are showing... I love the collars.

Kind regards,

Corinne Gough

Hi Corinne,

The pattern I make in the video and the lavender-colored one I'm wearing in my head-shot photo is New Look 6619. It's no longer in the pattern books, but sometimes you can find it for sale on-line. I did make some pattern changes: I put in a short bust dart coming from the side panel seam since it's not really a princess seam going over the bust; and on the lavender jacket, the neckline and collar is my own design. In the video-class, I go through the pattern development for the collar I use for the pink jacket -- and changing jacket collars gives you a whole new look. (You can see nine jackets that I've made from this same pattern on my website: http://sarahveblen.com/album.php?album_id=0).

Please let me know if you have more questions!

Subject: What type of collars? Date: 12/20/13 10:06 AM

Hi Sarah,

I've taken a couple of classes from you through PR many years ago and have really enjoyed them while learning new techniques.

Can you please share what type of collars will be covered in this class? Any chance of a notched collar being covered?

Thank you!

Hi thaiyal,

I don't cover a notch collar in this class, although I hope to offer classes on constructing both a notch collar and a shawl collar.

In this class, I show you how to develop (do the pattern work) for a roll collar, which is what the pink jacket in the class photo is. And of course, I show you all the construction steps as well.

Thaiyal,

I should have probably explained a bit more -- in this class, I wanted to be able to concentrate on how to think through selecting fabrics for a jacket, selecting interfacings to get the type of support that YOU want (rather than what a pattern might suggest), as well the fine points of basic construction. I felt that this was enough to concentrate on, which is why I chose a roll collar -- and included how to draft your own. I just felt that tackling a notch collar took the focus away from these other really important aspects of making a jacket, which is why I want to do a class all on its own on the construction of a notch collar.
