Hi - i recently acquired a used Bernina 1010, and it didn't come w/the bulb holder "tool" that you use to remove the bulb and also to replace it.

can you remove/replace the bulb w/o that holder tool?

thanks in advance.

I've changed the bulb in mine but not without the holder. If you don't have one and can't find one you might see it you can get some tubing about the same size. A dealer might have one or be able to get one - I know my dealer has them.

This doesn't look like the original but would work:

hi annenet,

thank you for your reply and the link. more questions (sorry!!)

that substitute - does it basically allow you to "grip" the bulb? is it made of rubber? or hard plastic?

you also mentioned using some sort of tubing - as in rubber tubing, or PVC-pipe tubing?

the opening underneath is big enough to fit my index, middle and thumb, and grasp one side of the bulb. but i didn't pull on it long enough to see whether it would come out. using the link you provided, i looked up the bulb and noticed the ballast was a simple "pop-in/out" style instead of screw-out/in.

thanks in advance.

I've never tried to do it that way. My holder is hard plastic but recently I was in a class for another machine where they mentioned that tubing would work on the bulb for those with that system.

It's a bayonette sort of connection. I've never taken it out without it because it's so easy to use the holder but I suspect it can be done.

Hi annenet,

thanks - i learned something about bayonet bulbs! there's a youtube video describing what they are (this is a dual contact, no treads, and has two notches on the sides of the neck. like Frankenstein's).

i went to a bernina dealer to pick up some supplies, and unfortunately they didn't have the bulb remover. however, she said you can remove the bulb manually, and i was able to get it out based on her instructions.

because of the bayonet style, to remove it, you push the bulb back into its socket, twist it to the left (note: there's no treads, but you must still twist it to position the notches to release it), then it pops out.

i turned the machine upside down to get more leverage on the machine, being sure not to damage the top thread spindles.

i pressed the bulb in several times before i got a feel for how far it could recess. i also placed a rubber glove (i didn't wear the glove, just used it to get a grip on the head of the bulb) between my fingers and the bulb, twisting to the left after the bulb recessed into its socket.

it popped right out. yay!

however, it wasn't the same bulb as the one the dealer sold me, so i have to exchange it.

Good to know! I changed one in my Featherweight that way but I never tried the 1010. Even thought I do have the holder that's great information!
