We have a young friend (okay, young, as in under 45... ) who has shingles and it is in *shudder* his optic nerve. I am not a vaccine proponent as a rule, but this is frankly terrifying. I know I can easily find out all the alarmist bad stuff and the knee jerk good stuff through our good friend google. But has anyone got first person experience with this vaccine?

My Mom had the vaccine after my Dad got the Shingles with no side effects and she has some health issues.

It's been a year for him and he is still not 100%. His rash showed up in his chest and he couldn't wear a shirt for months. He was on mega doses of pain meds.

Now mind you, this is a Marine and a man who ran marathons and was just a regular bada$$. I think the vaccine is worth it!!!! He is 71 and extremely healthy and very fit. He still works out daily, does spin class, etc and I've never seen him in so much pain.

This is a vaccine you definitely want to get! The chickenpox virus hangs around forever, and reactivation can lead to incredible pain (I know someone who had to have morphine for the pain) and the possibility of blindness or
postherpetic neuralgia.

I had the vaccine when I was 56 or 57. No problems with it. I've had enough friends with shingles that I don't want to take any chances.

I am eager to get this vaccine. My husband got it, no problems. I can't count the number of people I know who have gotten shingles and been in complete misery. Including a cousin who also got it in her eye.

I got my shingles vaccine back in May. No reactions except a bit is barely noticeable soreness at injection site, most likely because shot is into the muscle.

The people I know who have had shingles were positively miserable. Vaccine will not guarantee one will not get shingles but it will lessen the agony.

DH got his last month (finally) after talking to a guy he knows that gave a good description of his agony.

Is there a minimal age? I've heard 60 but I would love to get one now.

I went to Costco to get one, and was told that you need a doctor's note (basically, I suppose, a prescription) to get one from them if you're under 60. Worth noting that the people I know who've had the worst problems with shingles are all under 60. My doctor last year said he thinks under 60 is just fine. If you have a regular physician I'd call their office, tell them you want the vaccine, and ask for a note from them so you can get it at a pharmacy.

DH and I both have had the shingles shots 5-6 years ago and we're in our early 70s. My mother suffered with them back in the '90s and I wouldn't want to go through what she did, it was awful. We've had no side effects whatsoever so I'm all for it. When we got ours, we were told age 65 was the time to get it, as well as the pneumonia shot (got those, too, with no side effects).

I was under 60 when I got it, so it was not covered by my insurance. It is approved by the FDA for those over 50. It is given subcutaneously in the upper arm.
