I came home yesterday with a brand new Pfaff Ambition 1.5. As you can imagine I was pretty excited, and set the machine up last night. The bad news is this machine doesn't work. It was obviously brand new, wrapped and taped from the manufacturer. But I can't sew a stitch with it. When I turn on the machine it homes the needle left-to-right. When I press the start button the motor runs and will drive the bobbin winder when engaged, but will not engage the drive mechanism for the sewing function at all. I have made sure the bobbin winder is fully in the left (disengaged) position and pressed the start button. The motor runs, nothing else happens, then I get the motor overload fault. I also tried using the foot pedal in case that would make a difference. I have double checked my threading and that the bobbin and top thread are pulling freely. Then I tried it with no thread in it whatsoever. The hand dial turns freely so the mechanism is not jammed.

I just took this brand new machine out of the box, and all I can think is please tell me I don't have to make the two hour trip (each way) to return it. It's currently 6am on a Sunday morning (I've been up since 4am working at it after going to bed frustrated last night) so I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to talk to someone from the store to see what they suggest. Always the optimist, I'm hoping it is something simple that I have overlooked.

Has anyone else encountered this or have any suggestions? My 27yo mechanical White is looking better by the minute here.

I am so sorry to read of your frustration. I have zero ideas for you, but I am sending you sympathy. Hopefully your dealer will be able to fix it quickly over the phone Monday, or someone here on PR has one and can help you.

Thanks. I have tried both short-term (minutes) and longer-term (hours) shut-offs but it hasn't made a difference.

this may seem odd, but could you wind another bobbin and see if it still will do that and then check to be sure that that winder mechanism is back in place afterward? on some machines, you have to first push down and then left to disengage it. did the bobbin wind smooth? no chance of threads caught under the spindle preventing that mechanism from clicking back into position? I suspect that winder is either faulty or did not return to its intended spot. If the dealer can't help you resolve this over the phone, see if you can ship it back to them at their cost. If not, hopefully they will make that drive and the time you sacrificed worthwhile... such as a discount off a new replacement or a nice foot or two that you could use. i really hope its some simple thing they can walk through with you. Thanks Sewfrequent. I had engaged and disengaged the bobbin winder many times hoping to make it seat in the correct position, but your idea was definitely worth a try to see if that could be the problem. I just ran a full bobbin and it still isn't working.

You may be onto something with it being related to the bobbin, as someone online had a similar problem and it was because something in the bobbin compartment wasn't seated correctly, but in that case the handle wouldn't turn. The mechanism was jammed. I don't want to remove the plate and start taking mine apart until I speak with the dealership. I don't want them accusing me of tampering with it somehow and therefore causing the problem.

I have no idea if this machine would be belt driven or direct drive, and I am so tempted to start tearing it apart and having a look inside but would probably void any warranties if I did.

Unfortunately I think you have to go back to the dealer. As much as I love a new machine, there is always the chance of getting a lemon - I know I have. It is so disappointing. Let us know what happens after this and good luck.

Don't despair... The ambition is such a lovely machine, I very nearly bought that model myself. In lots of ways, better to have a full-on issue up front rather than a niggling is it-isn't it thing that you can never replicate back at the dealers!

If your dealer can't sort it over the phone then I would definitely be asking them to arrange collection and send you a new one. It would be normal, here in the UK, to use the various postal services and if your dealer is any good they should be tripping over themselves to put it right ASAP.

I choose to use a dealer I've never visited because they have a stellar reputation for customer service which is all provided on the phone and by posting machines back and forth, rather than the convenient but surly misogynist in the local town.

So with any luck, it will only be a matter of a couple of days and your NEW new machine will be with you! Good luck! Any machine can have a problem but it's how it's dealt with that matters.

Well I just heard back from the dealer (on a Sunday no less!). I explained what it was and wasn't doing, and I said that it sounds as if the motor isn't engaging with the drive mechanism. He said that's exactly what's going on and that I should be a mechanic. I said I am! lol

Anyway, long story short, it is a minor adjustment but he would rather I get a new one in the box. He has one open on the floor but is getting new ones in the box in on Tuesday or Wednesday which he would prefer to send me. He will UPS it to me immediately (although I did ask him to test drive it first) and then I will UPS the one I have back to him at his expense.

He seems to really want to make this right, and really appreciated that I wasn't yelling and screaming at him. I laughed and said that I realize it's certainly not his fault, that it obviously came from the factory this way, and I just want to be sewing. As others have said any brand can have a lemon. On top of the stellar treatment I got in the store yesterday from the staff I feel like I made a really good choice in dealer AND sewing machine. Give me a month or so to get acquainted with Phoebe and I'll be posting a review
