Does anyone know how to repair a Singer 401A needle bar that is stuck in the left position. The needle bar can be moved by hand, but won't respond to machine settings for zigzag or decorative stitches. It sews a straight stitch in the left position only, but should be able to sew straight in the middle and right also.

Have you oiled the machine? If it hasn't been used in awhile, oil all spots and let it sit for a day or two. There are a few gears that need lube, also.

If you can move the needlebar side to side by hand, see if you can follow the movement back to the cam stack. Somewhere along the way, something isn't moving and needs to be oiled, assuming that there isn't a mechanical problem.

Or, start at the cam stack and work your way to the needlebar.

Oh, I just remembered something. I have a 500 and I know that the two machines are mechanically almost identical. Does the 401 have a lever just to the right of the stitch pattern knobs on the front? The lever controls both the stitch width when zigzaging, and the needle position when straight stitching. Check and see if it needs any attention.
