Subject: Fitted Blouse Contest (skill level)2014 Date: 2/18/14 10:45 AM

Hi, I'm Jan and I'll be the manager for this contest. Since this is a brand new skill level based contest, I'm sure there will be lots of discussions! The post following this one will be the collection point for all the questions and answers.

Consider this your heads up that we will be starting our first ever contest that will segregate contestants by skill level. Participants will be required to create a Fitted Blouse and will be categorized by their self-identified skill level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced.) Understanding that identification of skill level is very subjective, the contest manager and committee will NOT be assessing validity of each participant's skill level; instead, this contest assumes an honor system and that participants will not attempt to participate in a skill level that is below their skills.

2014 Fitted Blouse Contest Skill Level

Sponsored by

Prize: There will be one winner in each of the skill level contests. Each winner will get a Gingher dressmaker shears, Gingher pinking shears and a French curve from Fabric Place Basement, Natick MA.

Note on the Sponsor: Even though Fabric Place Basement is a brick and mortar store (yay! for MA sewers), they have an extremely helpful staff who will help you place your order on the phone should you need something specific. We like to support local businesses so really psyched to have them as our sponsor for this contest.

Contest Theme:: Cut, sew, model and review a fitted blouse to showcase fitting skills. Entrants will be categorized by skill level and compete against others in their skill level category.

Contest Specific Rules

1. This contest will require entrants to self-select their skill level and enter their Fitted Blouse(s) in the appropriate skill level. The three skill levels are:
 Beginner
 Intermediate
 Advanced
Identification of skill level involves a great deal of subjectivity, so topics that discussed this issue will be identified to assist participants in assessing their skill level. We have faith that PR members will be fair in their identification of skills and will not intentionally underestimate their ability to gain advantage. Note that neither the contest manager nor the contest committee will be identifying or policing an entrant's skill level.
2. Contest will run from March 1 March 31, 2014.

3. The following elements are required for each entry, regardless of skill level. Blouses missing any of the following elements will be disqualified:
a. The blouse must use shaping through the use of darts, or dart equivalents such as princess seams, gathers, tucks, or pleats, to follow the contours of the body through the bust and waist
b. Closure required (buttons and buttonholes, loop buttons, zippers, hook and eye, tie, frogs, etc.) Because the blouse is fitted, it can't be a pullover.
c. Collar required Here is a link to Wikipedia list of collar types
d. Fabric - Woven or Stretch Woven only. Knits are not allowed. Can be a print or a solid - any color.
e. Set - In Sleeves required - Either short or long. Raglan/Dolman/Cut on sleeves not allowed.
f. Wrap-type blouses with tie closures ARE allowed.

4. The gallery entry must be a photograph of the fitted blouse on a person since the judging criteria includes 'best fit'. Photos of the fitted blouse on a dressform, hangar or lying flat will cause entry to be disqualified. Photos MAY crop the head out of photo, if desired for privacy issues.

5. Multiple entries are allowed but MUST be entered in the same skill level. i.e. a participant may not enter one blouse as a beginner and another blouse as an intermediate.

6. First place winners will be selected for EACH skill level (i.e. three winners) through a vote open to members of PR. Voters should select the entry that has the best fit. Quality of construction and evaluation of how well the entry meets the guidelines of this contest should also be taken into consideration when voting.

7. All cutting of the fabric and sewing can only be done from March 1 - March 31st. You may, however, pre-wash fabric, work on muslins, and cut pattern pieces before March 1st.

8. Commercial or self drafted patterns are allowed.

9. Voting will begin on April 3 and close on April 9. There will be a two day wait- April 1 and 2 so that the manager can ensure that all reviews fit the rules of the contest and are complete.

IMPORTANT!!! When you enter the contest, you will need to enter the appropriate skill level contest. There are actually THREE SEPARATE contests. We are working on revising the icons so the contests are clearly differentiated on the main contest page. The specific contests are labeled as follows with links to the contest page:

2014 Fitted Blouse - Skill Level BEGINNER

2014 Fitted Blouse - Skill Level INTERMEDIATE

2014 Fitted Blouse - Skill Level ADVANCED

ALL THREE CONTESTS will use this same message board.

Prize: Winner will be picked by reader votes. The winning entry will receive a fabulous prize from Fabric Place Basement, Natick, MA of $100 value.

General Rules for all Contests

1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. It is suggested to start your review as a Work In Progress (private or public) so that you can get any bugs ironed out prior to the deadline. Although Contest Managers and Contest Committee will help with technical issues, they may not be available at the end of the contest so be sure to allow adequate time to post your entry before the contest ends.

2. Fabric may be pretreated before the start of the contest.

3. Patterns MAY be muslined prior to the start of this contest however; fabric for contest garment may NOT be cut prior to the start of the contest.

4. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome.

5. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry, preferably on a live model.

6. Interpretation of rules is subject to the discretion of the contest manager and the contest committee.

Contest Eligibility:

1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who is a registered member on the site before the contest begins is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who's won first place in a contest on Pattern Review that ended in the previous four-month period is ineligible to win another contest (during that four-month period). For this contest, first-place winners from the following contests are NOT eligible to win:
 Holiday Sewing
 Cocktail Outfit
 Little white dress
 Inspired by the Movies
 New to Me Pattern Co
Voting Guidelines:

1. The first, second and third place winners will be decided by member vote. Prizes will be awarded to the first place winners only.

2. Each member can vote on up to five entries in each skill level category.

3. Voting will begin 2 days after contest closes and will close 7 days after voting starts.

4. Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some guidelines that may help you choose when voting. Consider how well the entry fulfills each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your votes:
Does the garment clearly reflect the pattern's line drawing?
How well does the garment fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?
Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?
Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?
Is the review complete and well written?
Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well does the garment fit?
Creative points. You may choose to give extra credit here for an entry that reflects additional creativity (embellishment, fabric choice, etc.) while staying within the nature of the original pattern.
Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex garment might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed

In this post, we'll collect all the questions and answers into this one spot. That should make it easy for all of us to detirmine if something has been previously asked.

I'm on Pacific time here, but I'll be checking in several times during the day to see how everyone is progressing!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: does the collar extending to tie ends count as a collar?
A: Yes, it does....
-------------------------------------------------------
Q: I would like to know if V8833 would meet the contest requirements.

A: Yes....it has princess seams and set in sleeves. Do make one of the collared versions and you will be OK
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Q: So I guess this is only for a woman's blouse & *not* a man's shirt? Just wanna be clear.....

A: Yes, women only is the official word.
------
Q: Do you have to pin your work?
A: Not at all! The Pinterest board is just a little extra to add to the fun.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I see the JJ blouse is on the Pinterest board. Does it really fit the contest? I was considering one, but I wasn't sure about 2 things - 1. Is it fitted enough? It has princess seams, but it's fairly loosely "fitted" (which is my preference generally). 2. The "collar" is really more of just the collar stand.

A: I just took a look at it and I believe that it does meet the requirements. The princess seams can be fitted more closely, if someone prefers that look, but it does have the seams front and back. As for the collar, I call it a Nehru (dating myself here!) but it is a valid collar style
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Q: My question is in selecting a blouse pattern what makes it intermediate versus beginner?

A: The skill levels refer to the sewist, not the pattern.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:1. When's the deadline to sign up?
2. What happens if I sign up and can't finish by the contest deadline?

A:You must sign up before your entry is submitted. There are no penalties for signing up and not being able to submit an entry.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Are side opening tops permitted?
A: No, they are still considered pullovers
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: If I have a pattern that isn't fitting or is missing a collar and I add it, can I enter it?
A: Yes, changes and self drafted patterns are permitted.

I am beyond excited for this contest! I need blouses right now and have a queue of blouses I want to make set up - this contest will hopefully motivate me to make one or two! The hardest part will be deciding which ones to make.

I love the overlap with the new to me pattern - though I will probably stick to a pattern company I used before for the blouse contest (I already know what I want to make) - it would be a nice opportunity for people to try a new pattern company to make a blouse. For me - the vest I'm making for the new to me contest will probably inspire the blouse I'll make to go with it ;-).

Can't believe it's March already!

Question on collars...I'm thinking of Vogue 8772 for one of my blouses, does the collar extending to tie ends count as a collar?

here's the link to the pattern:

I can't figure out how to post the picture...

Yes, it does. It's listed in the Wikipedia article as a "pussy bow" type.

I see that the link to that resourse didn't transfer when I copied and pasted. I added it in at the bottom, by the links to the skill levels.

That's a good looking blouse...and I've always liked that collar style!

I see that a collar is required. For anyone who has a blouse that meets the other requirements, but is missing a collar, I found a tutorial for a scalloped collar here.

It was drafted for the Pendrell (which is semi-fitted, but has no closure, so not eligible here), but could easily be adapted to other blouses.

I need a good "white shirt" to wear with skirts all summer, but don't yet have a pattern I want to try, so I might be in this contest, or maybe not, lol. THere is always the Colette Hawthorn...
