Are you ready to do some sewing for spring? Maybe if we all start sewing for nicer weather, it will finally come.

Announcing the first Challenge Contest for 2014 -- I am Sheila and will be your contest manager for this challenge.

The Theme: TERRIFIC TANKS - AMP UP YOUR CREATIVITY
This contest is all about showcasing your creativity using embellishment techniques. Your base garment must be a basic tank top/shell that is sewn from knit or woven fabric, which will then be turned into something fantastic using the sewn or non-sewn embellishment of your choice. (wording edited for clarity)

Our Northern Hemisphere participants can make that spectacular summer tank top and our friends in the Southern Hemisphere who are moving towards the cooler months might consider a gorgeous shell to wear under a jacket or cardigan.

Contestants are encouraged to plan their entry and purchase their supplies from April 1st to 15th and then the cutting, sewing and embellishing begins on April 16th for a two-week period.

Rules:
1. Contest will run from April 16th to April 30th, 2014. TWO WEEKS ONLY!

2. Each entry may only include one tank. Multiple entries are allowed.

3. Tank top/shell must be sewn. No RTW allowed.

4. Definition of Tank Top / Shell: Sleeveless top which can be worn in public, on its own, without outer garment. Even if top is intended to be worn under a jacket, it must be suitable without another layer on top. For further clarification on the type of top we are describing, the following ARE NOT allowed: Skinny/spaghetti straps; camisoles; pajama tops.

Contest Committee Definition Clarification -- 04-02-14

4. Definition of Tank Top / Shell: Sleeveless top which can be worn in public, on its own, without outer garment. Top must be no longer than hip length. Top may NOT have casing, shirring or any other waist definition other than darts or side seam shaping. For further clarification on the type of top we are describing, the following ARE NOT allowed: Skinny/spaghetti straps; camisoles; pajama tops, tunics.

5. Embellishments may include paint, dye, knit/crochet embellishments, tatted collars, rhinestones/beads/jewels, serging techniques, applique, embroidery, weaving, etc. Embellishments not specifically identified may be allowed but check with the contest manager if you're not sure. Embellishment may occur before garment is sewn (i.e. painting, fabric dying), in conjunction with the sewing or after the base garment is sewn.

6. Entries will be judged on creativity of the entry.

7. The gallery entry must include a photo of the article of clothing. Items do not need to be on a live model.

8. First and second place winners will be selected through a vote open to members of PR.

9. All cutting of the fabric and sewing can only be done from April 16th to April 30th, 2014. You may, however, pre-wash fabric, work on muslins, and prepare pattern pieces before April 16th.

10. Commercial or self drafted patterns for adults only are allowed. -- rule clarified by Contest Committee 04-04-14

11. Voting will begin on May 3rd and close on May 9th.

General Rules for all Contests:

1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. It is suggested to start your review as a Work In Progress (private or public) so that you can get any bugs ironed out prior to the deadline. Although Contest Managers and Contest Committee will help with technical issues, they may not be available at the end of the contest so be sure to allow adequate time to post your entry before the contest ends.

2. Fabric may be pretreated before the start of the contest.

3. Patterns MAY be muslined prior to the start of this contest however; fabric for contest garment may NOT be cut prior to the start of the contest.

4. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome.

5. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry, preferably on a live model.

6. Interpretation of rules is subject to the discretion of the contest manager and the contest committee.

Prizes:

First Prize: A Complimentary Friends of PR membership and an online class of the winner's choice.

Second Prize: A Complimentary Friends of PR membership and a pattern of the winner's choice.

Contest Eligibility:

1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who is a registered member on the site before the contest begins is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who has been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who has won first place in a contest on Pattern Review that ended in the previous four-month period is ineligible to win another contest (during that four-month period). For this contest, first-place winners from the following contests are NOT eligible to win:
* Holiday Sewing
* Cocktail Outfit
* Little white dress
* Inspired by the Movies
* New to Me Pattern Co
* Fitted Blouse

Voting Guidelines:

1. The first, second and third place winners will be decided by member vote. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners only.

2. Each member can vote on up to five entries.

3. Voting will begin 3 days after contest closes and will close 7 days after voting starts.

4. Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some guidelines that may help you choose when voting. Consider how well the entry fulfills each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your votes:
* Does the garment clearly reflect the pattern's line drawing?
* How well does the garment fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?
* Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?
* Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?
* Is the review complete and well written?
* Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well does the garment fit?
* Creative points. You may choose to give extra credit here for an entry that reflects additional creativity (embellishment, fabric choice, etc.) while staying within the nature of the original pattern.
* Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex garment might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed

Sew ..... put on your creative thinking caps and start planning your entry. Remember -- cutting and sewing can't start until April 16th but you can prep your fabric and patterns and work on your fit before the start date.

In this post, I'll post questions and answers into one spot. That should make it easy for all of us to determine if something has been previously asked.

Thought I would add some pattern possibilities here for those who are not sure what would qualify:

Simplicity 2599, View C, D, E, F
Sewaholic 1001 Pendrell View C
Vogue 8536, View C
Kwik Sew 3740, View B
Jalie 2804, View A
Jalie 2787, View C
Colette Sorbetto

Starting April 6, 2014 I will be adding a post in the body of the thread for embellishment ideas/techniques -- I will list the technique/idea here as well as the page # of this thread where you can find the post:

April 6th -- Lace (see page 6 of this thread)
April 7th -- Ruffles/Flounces (see page 6)
April 8th -- Crochet Trims (see page 8)
April 9th -- Beading (see page 9)
April 10th -- Painting (see page 9 -- actually posted on 13th)
April 11th -- Crystals/Rhinestones (see page 10 -- posted on 13th)
April 12th -- Stencilling (see page 10 -- posted on 13th)
April 13th -- Colour Blocking (see page 10)
April 14th -- Stretch Mesh (see page 10)
April 15th -- Ribbons (see page 12)

The following is a definition clarification from the Contest Committee
Contest Committee Definition Clarification -- 04-02-14

4. Definition of Tank Top / Shell: Sleeveless top which can be worn in public, on its own, without outer garment. Top must be no longer than hip length. Top may NOT have casing, shirring or any other waist definition other than darts or side seam shaping. For further clarification on the type of top we are describing, the following ARE NOT allowed: Skinny/spaghetti straps; camisoles; pajama tops, tunics.

Q: Is a front closure allowed on a tank top/shell?
A: For the purposes of this contest, a tank top/shell would not have a front closure.

Q: Is a side zip allowed?
A: Yes a side zip is allowed.

Q: Can the item be for any age human? girls boys, men, women? or it is restricted to adult female clothing?
A: The Committee intended this to be an adult clothing contest to level the playing field - difficult to vote on a woman's tank top versus a toddler's. We apologize for not stating this explicitly in the rules.

Q: How is hip length defined?
A: No longer than low hip or top of thighs

Q: Are peplums allowed?
A: No, a peplum is a style of top not an embellishment.

Q: How about a cowl neck tank top, like McCalls 6078?
A: Yes a cowl neck tank top is allowed.

Q: Are collars allowed?
A: Yes collars are allowed as an embellishment.

Q: Do the embellishments have to be non sewn?
A: The embellishments can sewn or non-sewn.

Q: Are princess seams allowed?
A: Yes, princess seams are allowed.

For me a tanktop is always knitted...and for winter. Can you show an example of a 'summer' tank top? I'm having trouble visualizing it.
Is it just a plain collarless sleeveless top like this?

I would think some examples of woven shells could be Simplicity 2599 (without the added bits), or view C of Sewaholic Pendrell.

Knit examples might be Vogue 8536 or Kwik Sew 3740.
The sleeveless views in both instances.

You are correct -- a tank top is a plain, collarless, sleeveless top.

Is there a different name for these types of tops in the UK?

Are you thinking of a top layer that would completely cover the base tank top? Something like a chiffon overlay?

My thought would be that the tank top would still have to be a visible component of the project so completely covering it up may not work for the purposes of this challenge contest -- I will check with the Contest Committee.

The summery ones are called vest tops. Tank Tops are generally knitted by your granny. ;)
