Hello All,

I will be visiting your lovely country in October and was hoping for some guidance in fabric shopping!

I will be in Los Vegas for 4 days, L.A. 5 days, San Francisco 5 days and San Diego for 4.

Any help from you will be greatly appreciated from me, but probably not my credit card!

If you search the forums you'll see lots of threads about shopping in the garment district in LA. My personal hit list is always to go to the FIDM Scholarship store and the Michael Levine Loft first, and then on to the rest of the garment district. I know there are locations of "The Fabric Store" in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne but it's worth a visit along with Mood across the street.

I hear Britex fabric store in San Fransisco has a whole 4 floors/stories of fabric! I have not been in it though myself and on purpose even, (resisting really hard on that) as I need to stay away from it, as I already have a problem with having just way too much fabric!

PR Weekend was in San Francisco last year. They handed out a list of fabric stores in the Bay Area. Maybe someone in the office can provide you a copy.

I very much agree with the comments on shopping in LA. Bring an empty suitcase or mail a box home. Don't forget to carry a sturdy tote bag. On my first trip to the LA fashion district, I parked my car in a paid parking lot and kept going back to the car to unload my purchases. Prices there are unbelievable low. FDIM has lots of fabrics for $1-$2 a yard. Michael Levine loft sells by the pound. I got about 10-12 yards of fabric for under $10. last time.

Thank you for your suggestions. The prices there are unheard of hear. My daughter wools for an international freight company so she might come in handy!
I can't wait to get over there, enjoyed it so much last time.

LA - The garment district has much to offer but if I had limited time I might want to limit myself to Michael Levine's then spend my time on other known entities with great quality/selection. My favorites -- F&S on Pico Blvd. (one side of the street is garment, other home dec), Mood on La Brea, The Fabric Store on La Brea, haven't been here forever but hear it still has a lot - International Silks & Woolens in the west Hollywood/Beverly Hills area, I think on Beverly or Santa Monica Blvd.

SF - Britex is absolutely something to experience, they have real Missoni and very high end high priced fabric as well as more affordable everyday wearables. A real treasure that I can always count on for outstanding buys/quality and amazing fabrics (some that are on well reputed online sites for $19/yd I've bought for under $4/yd) - Fabrix. Across the street down a block is Satin Moon. There's a big store called Discount Fabrics, not all that discount imo, but a huge selection. Stone Mountain and Daughter in Berkeley is also one where you can count on finding wonderful garment fabrics, trims, findings.

SD - I don't know if there are any stores left there at all or so my SD friends would have me believe. The lady who used to own Waechter's Silk in NC moved there and opened a small shop, I thought I heard it was closing but may have it confused with another. Perhaps someone else will chime in here with some great place I'm unaware of.

Have fun!

Where are you staying in LA? Are you taking public transit or renting a car?
