I am part of an experimental cancer treatment trial that may in the future allow women with early stage breast cancer to forego surgery. It is an important trial with great promise for the not so distant future of all woman kind. I also have the potential of being able to avoid a double masectomy if this works for me. My participation is in jeopardy due to a last minute cancellation by a friend who was going to be with me in Houston.

I need someone to stay with me overnight Wednesday night (tomorrow) so that if I have a delayed reaction to my infusion, they can call 911. This person would not have any medical duties or liability whatsoever, and I would be happy to sign anything appropriate to relieve the person of any concerns. I just need a kind, dependable person who is willing to treat me like family so that I don't have to do without this treatment. My family is not willing to support me during this time. I do not have any funds to pay for this, and the housing will likely be MD Anderson (free) housing near the hospital, unless something else comes up. I could stay at the person's home if they live "right by the hospital" as the nurse told me and don't mind having me there.

If you know of anyone who is very trustworthy who can help me, I would be deeply indebted. I was planning to come to Houston today so I could be fresh for tomorrow, but since my housing situation down there has to be reestablished and MD Anderson can only offer one night, I wil leave home at about 2:30 am tomorrow morning and stay tomorrow night.

Thanks for reading this. If you PM me, I can send you my phone number or call you on my dime.

I'm sorry to hear of you dilemma but the good news is that I have a great sister who can help. I've sent you a PM asking for your phone #.

Well, if that doesn't work out PM me and I'll see if DS can watch the boys. Short notice, so it might not be doable. Good luck!

PS. I am glad you posted here for help!!

Thank you all for your sweet, sweet responses! I called so many numbers of organizations who were supposed to help but felt they couldn't before imposing on this group. I didn't want to ask those whose job was not to care for me. But, you are making it your job to care for me, and I'm so deeply moved...and relieved! ( : Your response is helping me know that throughout ths process and the following surgery in a week or two it will be okay.

Wow! I'm taking a five minute breather to catch my breath and update PR members on this. It's been an exhausting but absolutely wonderful day! I started out pretty upset and fired up to make sure I could get to the clinical trial/treatment. In the process I was so blessed to get to know some absolutely wonderful ladies. I suddenly feel supported and that it really will be fine. But I feel that it is better than fine already because of my new friends which whom I shared so much and from whom I learned so much.

Ironically, I heard in late afternoon that MDA had completed the final test of my tissue and that I didn't qualify after all. They had said to plan as though I did because of the time frame. So, I don't have to go to as many appointments tomorrow and don't have to stay the night.

As one person pointed out it would be easier to stay over, but I'm going to save that favor for when I reeeeeally need it next week. I can always sleep in the car if I have to on the way back, and I'll have my 12yo DS for company. I've got him set up to sew patches/badges on his boy scout shirt during the drive and when waiting for me during my appointments. My car's AC went out last week on a drive back from Houston when it was 106 degrees so I might wait at MDA until it cools off if I can stay awake that long or maybe snooze in an easy chair at MDA. This is one of the few visits when I won't have any type of surgery. Just a consultation, blood work, chest xray and business office visit.

You know, this entire process helped me not only by making new friends but with my knowing that I will be taken care of when I have my surgery next week. The details are not all worked out, but I now have confidence that they will be. I will update you all when I know more, but I just wanted to say that I called several agencies and individuals who might have helped or who had offered to help should I need it and all are great but none were able to help me...until I asked here. Wow!

Gotta run to be ready to leave very early tomorrow. Still have several hours of paperwork to do that I had planned on doing this morning, but it will all be great!

Thanks, PR friends!

Made it to and from Houston yesterday. With the travel and extra appointments and errands within MDA, it was a 21 hour day and had a hard time staying awake on the way back. Will try not to do that alone again, but am making progress.

Surgery is next week. Am praying that when I wake up, it's not more extensive than what we all hope. Am thankful to have Peggy in Houston to help...very thankful.

MD Anderson is a wonderful place. Whenever I recover from my current challenges, I would love to support them in any way possible.

PopoAgie, I'm saying prayers and sending good thoughts your way. Let us know how it goes.

And now the soapbox - October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Ladies, one in seven of us will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That number is not getting any smaller, despite advances in treatment and early detection. Please, please, PLEASE check yourself every month, and if you are over 40, or have a history of breast cancer in your family, make sure you get your annual mammogram. The life you save could be yours!

Off the soapbox now. Thanks for listening.

Glad you made it through okay, PopoAgie! Keep us updated.

Thanks for the reminder, Ann. No one thinks it'll ever happen to them!
