A set-in sleeve that is well proportioned and well sewn can add to the overall beauty of a garment. But a sleeve that doesn't hang correctly and/or has been poorly sewn can detract from the appearance of a garment -- and be uncomfortable as well. Attaining a great sleeve depends in part on the development of the armhole opening. So it's important to study these two interrelated parts of a garment at the same time.
This class is for you if:
- you have trouble sewing set-in sleeves smoothly
- you don't know how much ease there should be in a set-in sleeve
- you can't get the bicep of a sleeve to fit well
- you have a large bicep
- you have a very thin bicep
- you aren't comfortable when you wear garments that have set-in sleeves
There are three components to this 15-lesson class:
- Developing a sleeve that fits.
- Making sure the armhole of your bodice fits well.
- Sewing a set-in sleeve successfully.
A note about fitting the sleeve: Although you can manage to fit a sleeve on your own body, it involves having good mirrors and the stamina to take off the fitting garment, re-pin, and then put the fitting garment back on over and over again. If you have a sewing buddy or family member who is willing to help you, the fitting process will go more quickly. The lessons will contain plenty of pictures to illustrate what an ill-fitting sleeve looks like, what comprises a good fit, and tips that will help you achieve a well-fitting sleeve.
Skills Required: Basic sewing techniques. This class is geared towards advanced beginners through accomplished sewers, although inquisitive beginners who enjoy a challenge will learn a great deal about fit and basic pattern work. Some knowledge of pattern making is helpful but not necessary. Sarah will carefully explain how to execute the required pattern work as well as give you valuable tips about basic pattern making.Class is a combination of PDF downloads, Q&A boards and Interactive real time chat sessions with the instructors. |
