Stitch-and-Flip Jacket Construction Class Feedback

 Class feedback submitted by participants

I highly recommend this class, Shannon is an excellent teacher and answered any and all questions icw jacket contruction not just the lining. If further pictures were necessary those were promptly provided. The format was precise and to the point and always delivered on time. Being from South Africa I was not able to attend the chats, the times were not convenient because of the time difference. I would recommend the class, being on the internet, its like having a personal tutor come to your home every day.

This is an outstanding class and instructor! The format of posted lessons, chats, and board discussions was superbly organized. Shannon's lessons contained a wealth of information and she was quick to make changes in them even after they had been posted. For example, she redid the example photos in one lesson for greater clarity. She promptly and thoroughly responded to all questions participants posted, offering problem solving help, suggestions, or cheerleading.I participated in one of three chats (forgetful senior citizen that I am ) and found it stimulating and fun. Not only did I learn a bushel of information, I completed a reversible jacket that I am extremely proud of! Shannon is an excellent teacher and I highly recommend this class!

This class had so much great information, I will use ALL of it in my sewing, for many projects to come. Kudos to you Shannon, and Thanks!!!

I was so curious about this technique, I just had to take the course even though it was the holidays. I've taken 2 other courses from Shannon, and she is a terrific instructor and explains things so well. I ended up with a very nice jacket that will be lightweight for summer, even with a lining! All the lessons were clear, and Shannon gave us bonus lessons to boot! My only regret is that the chats were too late for me. I look forward to taking more classes with Shannon.

I liked the overall format very much. This was my firrst online class and I was not disappointed. It really got me motivated to complete a project. The lessons were on time and were easy to understand. I would recommend that an inexperienced sewer taking this class choose materials that are easy to work with, stable and not slippery. Don't complicate matters when you are learning something new. Sharon answered all my questions. No technical difficulties, chats were fun - got the impression all were enjoying this class as much as I. Shannon knows her stuff - I feel as though I am getting information from a professional, someone I can have confidence in. I would recommend this class to anyone who would like a new way to make a jacket - much easier than the usual way. I've already signed up for two more classes, including Shannon's T-shirt class.

The lessons were clear, well-designed and Shannon was more than patient with our questions all along the way. I didn't find the chats convenient but loved having a message board available 24 hours a day, especially because I could see other's questions about slightly different projects and Shannon's thoughtful answers. I kept notes from that board so I can refer to those answers when I try this technique on a different project. This was my first on-line class and I was thrilled.

This was my second class with PR and by far the best! Shannon is an excellent instructor. Her lessons are very well presented and she obviously is very concerned with her students success. She went way beyond my expectations with prompt and concise answers to questions that came up and provided timely answers. The techniques learned here are tremendous. My jacket came out beautiful and I will use this technique whenever and where ever possible. I highly recommend this class.

I am so glad I took this class. I love the format of the class. The lessons are clear and complete with detailed pictures. The lessons were delivered each morning before 7:00 am and I really looked forward to each days lesson. What I really like about these online classes, is that I can save and print each lesson and make a nice notebook to refer back to when I'm making my next project. I have learned so much from Shannon's classes. I was able to attend one of the chats and I enjoyed participating. I was able to print the other two and learned from the questions that the other students asked. I'm amazed that Shannon answers every question so thoroughly and quickly, even on the weekends. If she is going to be away for a while, she always let us know how long before she would be available again. I'm hooked on these classes. I have already signed up for Shannon's Build a Better T-Shirt class.

This has been one terrific class! I still have some study and reading to do as I finish my jacket, but Shannon was so good at anticipating and solving problems that I am sure I will have no trouble. Couldn't attend the class chats as my 14 year old granddaughter decided to pay us a spur of the moment visit....couldn't turn that down. And so I am a bit behind the rest of the class. Would highly recommend this class, regardless of experience level. There is so much to learn here. Many thanks, Shannon.

First, I have taken other PatternReview classes so I have a basis for comparison. This was THE BEST class I have taken. It was, by far, the most organized and best presented. I would take any class Shannon offers in the future. Her instructions were excellent, both the actual class material and her online/chat info.
Sandra C, Feb 2005

Shannon is extraordinarily wonderful with answering questions and making sure people understand. I will definitely try to make a jacket with this technique in the summer, when things die down. I will take Shannon up on her offer to answer questions even after class.
MarissaB, Feb 2005

Like Sandra, I have taken other classes at PR. This class was the best. The format works because all the information you need is right on your computer, ready to be printed out and taken to the sewing room. No other material is needed to complete the class. All the lessons arrived in a timely matter.

The lessons themselves are terrific. This new technique is not intuitive for me, but I trusted Shannon and followed the instructions and WOW. It worked a charm the first time. If you have not taken this class and are considering it, Shannon gave us little extras in the class. One was a fake welt pocket. Again, not terribly intuitive, but I followed the instructions, and came up with 2 marvelous pockets.

The lessons are so specific that Shannon has them set up in groups. It is not unusual to get lesson 2a, 2b, and 2c. Even more amazing is that Shannon asked us all which pattern we were using so she could tailor any specific information she thought we should have. All my questions were answered.

There were no technical difficulties that I remember. I attended the 2 class chats that were at a good hour for me. One chat, geared to our international sisters was during my workday.

I really do recommend this class. I personally will take another class with Shannon, should she be generous enough to offer one. I got more from this class than I have at classes that I had to leave my house for.

I'd just like to add that Shannon is very available. Our class is officially over, and she is still moderating our class board and answering our questions.
Ann, Feb 2005

I loved the overall format of this class. The lessons were on time, well done and complete. They were easy to understand and the pictures were excellent. The instructor answered all my questions in complete detail. I had no technical problems. I didn't participate in the class chats, but I did read the transcripts. I definitely recommend this class with this instructor. And if your other instructors are as good as Shannon, I'll be taking more classes.

I have taken numerous online courses, a few at Patternreview and more at another website. This was, far and away, the very best course I have taken to date. My jacket turned out great (yes, I will be posting pictures soon), Shannon was absolutely OUTSTANDING as an instructor, and I really can't think of anything to make the class more enjoyable (other than figuring a way to housetrain my little Nubian dairy goat so she could keep me company in the sewing room.)
Lani A George, Feb 2005

The overall format of this class is just great! It is so well organized. Shannon familiarized herself with the various patterns we all chose to use & then was able to give very specific answers to all our individual questions. Thank you, Deepika & Shannon for all this. I am also printing out all the help on the class board. I truly do feel that my SNF notebook is a treasure trove!
PVA, Feb 2005

I love the sewingclass. It was easy to follow and I learnt a lot. I have not completed my jacket but working on it. I could not attend the chats due to time differents (Sweden) and workinghours but read all the transcripts and got idees from them. Sewing classes are rare in my town and very basic so I know I wouldnt learn anything, here I did. I will buy more classes from you in the future, maybe the bound pocket and buttonholes, and I allready recomended you to my friends.
Lotta, Feb 2005

I really enjoyed this class it was my first experience with an online class and it far exceeded my expectations. The material was very well explained and presented in an easy to follow format. Shannon Gifford was so quick at responding to any questions it felt like she was indeed right there. I enjoyed the class chats and will take another course especially from Shannon. The only thing I found difficult was there was a lot of info given just before the last chat I would have liked to have had one more weekend to absorb it all then have another chat but Shannon is so quick to answer on the board it wasnt a big concern......thanks Deepika and Shannon for the experience it was fun...Chris
sewcrazee, Feb 2005

This was a wonderful class and I feel sew thankful!! It was presented in a very student friendly format. I am still working on my jacket, but feel confident that support will be available for me to complete it although the class is over. I give the instructor 5 stars. The format was great, set up into 'bite size lessons that even a beginner could do! Thanks. As a new seamstress I would be interested in a 'muslin class' from Shannon. Also, how to use the muslin to alter the pattern.
ChristineA, Feb 2005

It exceeded my expectations. I didn't really know what to expect since this was my first online class and the first time I made a lined jacket. The class and information was high quality and professionally presented. The things that I offer for suggestions are minor: Head each of the lessons and subsections. Page numbers on each of the lessons (Shannon did that after someone suggested it after the 1st lesson was posted). Some of the concepts were not explained thoroughly. For experienced sewers, it was probably not necessary, but I'm a sort of beginner and "bag the lining" was a mystery to me. Shannon was very thorough. The course materials were mostly excellent with a few question areas. My detailed question areas are on the message boards. I had the most questions about how to do the sleeve linings, the sleeve head, some interfacing issues and some facings.
Denny, Feb 2005

I liked the overall format of the class, the lessons were delivered in a timely organized fashion. The photos were excellent and Shannon was a perfect instructor. I attended a few of the chats, most of my questions and/or problems were addressed by other members and answered by Shannon during the chats. I would definitely take another class and recommend them. I love learning new sewing methods and the stitch and flip is so versatile.
kg, Feb 2005

This was my 3rd class with Shannon, and as with the other 2, was fantastic. I learn so much from her classes. She is by far the best teacher here. I really like the daily class downloads, instead of 1 massive class download, and her quick, instructive responses to questions. No matter how dumb my questions may seem, she never responds that way, always update and instructive. Thanks Shannon for being such a great teacher and I look forward to your next class. (hint, hint - a Channel Jacket class would be great!)
TarheelSewer, Nov 2005

This is the second class that I have taken with Shannon as the instructor. The overall format was easy to follow, the lessons were delivered on time just as she said they would be; the instructions were easy to understand and thorough with beautiful illustrations of the technique. Even though I was not able to sew along with the class, I did follow the lessons and have printed them out for my notebook to use when I can get around to making the jacket. Shannon is so available to ask questions and she answers them promptly. Again I was not able to attend the chats, but read them all and have printed them as well as the Q&A/discussions for future reference. I would definitely recommend these classes and will take Shannon's classes again. I have learned so much from her.
Deady, Nov 2005

As others have stated, this class is really great and Shannon is an excellent instructor. This is my second class with Shannon and her class preparation is incredible. The downloads were timely and so full of information and pictures it was easy to follow the instructions, however, when a question was posted Shannon was right there to answer. The chats and message board was really a learning experience for all of us since we were using, in some cases, different patterns and we had different style issues. i.e...yokes etc. She gave us some bonus lessons and tips that don't come in the pattern instructions. My jacket turned out beautifully and I am happy I learned this technique as it's quite a timesaver.
tizktsews, Nov 2005

I have taken other sewing classes but this one was the best. Shannon, you are a gifted teacher. I love my jacket. The classes were well organized with all the lessons provided in a timely manner. The lessons contained detailed instructions along with pictures where needed. Shannon, answered questions so quickly that if I was waiting on an answer to preceed with my jacket I didn't have to wait long! I went to one chat but often I am in bed by 9:00pm. Not sure if the daytime chat was well attended but I am at work so daytime is not good for me. I will take more classes from Shannon!!
Anne S, Nov 2005

This was my first on-line sewing class. I was amazed at how much I learned and how personal the class was. Shannon's lessons are well prepared. She was marvelous on the boards and I just love my new jacket. (Just finished, will post a review when I get the matching skirt finished.) I have already signed up for another class with Shannon. She's just GREAT !!
sprKathleen, Nov 2005

Once again, Shannon presented a wonderful class. The class lessons were plentiful and very detailed with lots of photos and as Shannon always does, presents several extra lessons, specific to requests of class participants. She answered all questions in a very timely, even speedy manner and she has a great sense of humor. Shannon's classes are tops and she is a fabulous teacher, I will definitely be taking more and highly recommend them. Thanks Shannon!!!!!!!!
Christine N, Nov 2005

This was an excellent class -- I learned SO much. Shannon's lessons were very clear and detailed -- but not so much information that it was overwhelming. Love that they are so well-illustrated. I now have a little binder of Shannon's lessons for future use. She paces the class very well. I appreciated this as I work fulltime and did not feel as if I couldn't catch up on the weekends. In fact, I finished my jacket the weekend the class ended which was a major surprise for me. Shannon is so accessible for questions and makes you feel as if the question/s you asked are not silly or dumb. While I enjoyed the chats, I found the discussion list to be very valuable. I saved them to edit or search in the future. I would definitely recommend both the class and Shannon as an instructor.
Patti B, Nov 2005

Excellent class. Lessons were delivered on time, and were very clear and throrough. The photos in the lessons were very helpful. Shannon answered all my questions, and the many questions from other class participants. She is very generous with her time, answering each question and tailoring "bonus' lessons on topics that we were inerested in (e.g., notched collar, mitered corners).
Autumn, Nov 2005

I think that the class was excellent. The individual lessons were clear and had very good photos illustrating the steps of the technique. In the few places where I got confused, I got very good answers. I also liked that Shannon posted a couple of extra lessons, in order to illustrate things people had asked about.
EleanorMcCarthy, Nov 2005

Shannon offers all the information and help to make you successful. Excellent class. Would highly recommend.
