Skate or Dance It Up!
|
It's fall again, and that means that it's back to a busy schedule of school, dance, skating and gymnastics for many. Of course, the adults who dance, skate and do gymnastics have never stopped for vacation (training, training, training). The recent Olympics made us think about sewing for the athlete in your life. So we've decided to talk about sewing the outfits you need to dance, skate and exercise.
Olympians Sew Too!
PR member Vickie Carlson pointed out on our Facebook page that April Ross, who won a silver medal on the U.S. Women's Beach Volleyball team at the London 2012 Olympics, lists sewing as one of her hobbies! Perhaps she has made her volleyball outfits! | | Does Olympian April Ross sew her practice wear? | Where do you start? agympro started with Jalie 3138. She says, "I am very new to this and have never bought a pattern before... I am going to attempt (one day) to sew my daughter a gymnastics leotard." But she wondered, what about the butt coverage? | | Jalie 3025 can satisfy the modesty factor. | edster said that she had made Jalie 3138 multiple times recently, and it fit her gymnast wonderfully.
And she says,"If you are just looking at the pattern flat, remember that when you sew
|
it up and add elastic, the pattern back will become nicely curved and provide coverage. I have read many times that 'people say' to apply the elastic in almost a 1:1 ratio in the front, and more gathered in the back, which results in better coverage and less riding up."
 | | Jalie 3138 is a good place to start. |
And JEF points out that shorts over the leotard is always an option. ( Jalie 3025 Skating/Dance Skirt is another.) Read more of this discussion.

Now, what fabrics are popular?
Nylon-lycra is a favorite. Other favored fabrics are interlock knits, stretch velvet and Glissenet.
I Don't Dance...Don't Ask MeOf course, if you don't dance, skate or do gymnastics, you can still use one of these patterns to make everyone ooh and aah, like BunnyGirl19 did. She chose Jalie 2791 to make herself a Halloween costume...a pink flamingo! She used hot pink Mystique for the main body and hot pink Glissenet for the skirt, sleeve ruffles, and upper bodice contrast. She also created a tail with maribou feather trim that she sewed on above the skirt attachment at center back. | | BunnyGirl19 strikes the pose in Jalie 2791! |
She says, "In all, this was a fairly simple pattern to follow and was a good fit without any alterations being necessary. I'd definitely recommend it."
