I am lucky to have an apple tree in my yard, and this year they are exceptionally good. So good that we're eating them right off the tree and sharing with our friends. Wait a minute, this is supposed to be about sewing. What can I say? I am inspired by everything around me. Apples remind me of fall, earthy colors, boots and leather! And that's why we planned to launch Kenneth's Leather Class in the Fall so we can all learn how to sew with this wonderful material. This weekend I am making my first leather with slot darts from this class. So cool!

Can you believe PatternReview is going to be 12 years old soon? You can help celebrate by voting and hosting a party in your area.  Or come to ours in Massachusetts on Nov. 9th.

Fall is also a reminder that days are getting shorter, so I always like to plan ahead. Sew a mini-wardrobe, and if you use a Jalie pattern, you can enter it in both the contests.

This month, we are featuring the lovely lauramae. Read on to find out where she gets her inspiration from.

Until next time,
Happy Sewing,

How long have you been sewing?

Gosh, I guess it must be more than 20 years at this point!

How did you learn to sew?

My mom showed me how to hand-embroider when I was a little girl.  Counted cross stitch was my absolute favorite craft, and I was always working away on little kits.  A trip to the library always included a stop by the craft book section where I found The Dollhouse People, and made myself a family of little fabric dolls and lots of clothing for their wardrobe from fabric scraps.

PatternReview on Facebook: Did Mom Make All Your Clothes?

"When I was growing up, my mother made all my clothes."

Is that possible today? Do you have memories of that? Will your children have memories of that? Do/did you sew some or most of their clothes at different ages? Do you have good feelings about that?

"I used to buy fabric remnants and make my boys shorts and play trousers when they were little. When I was at school in the 70s, our mothers were expected to make our summer uniform dresses from a choice of two fabrics available at a local fabric shop. Can you imagine if Mums had to do that today?"

Leather 101 New! Leather 101 Video Class with Designer Kenneth D. KingLeather101

Do you have leather envy? Do you admire leather outfits on people on the street and in the mall but don't want to pay the exorbitant prices that buying a leather piece requires?

If the thought of a buttery suede peplum top makes you drool, you must sign up for Kenneth D. King's new class, Leather 101.

Kenneth uses Vogue 8815 to demonstrate all you need to know about sewing it in leather, including:

  • What kind of leather to select for your garment
  • What types of patterns are suitable for leather garments
  • What tips and tricks you can use to get the right look
  • What construction techniques you need to use for seams, darts, flaps, collars and cuffs
  • What steps you need to follow to sew the leather peplum top

You also get a 29-page PDF guide that outlines, photo by photo, different types of darts and seams that you can create in your leather garments.

Watch these lessons at your leisure, at your own pace, on your own computer...  They're always available to you!

SBCC Mimosa SBCC: A New Pattern Company!SBCC

We welcome a new pattern company to PatternReview:  Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick Patterns (SBCC).

Motivated by her repeated encounters with ill-fitting clothing for petites, Betsy, the patternmaker of Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick Patterns, has designed a line with this market in mind.

Betsy explains, "I've always been the smallest size on the rack. As I became more aware of my shape and proportions, I have realized the lack of options for petite ladies in both the ready to wear market and home sewing patterns. Sometimes it is just about the right proportions - not just making clothing shorter."
