UPDATE: LOCATION OF THE THREAD TENSION RELEASE:
Pulling up on the presser foot lever will release the thread tension. You will need to pull it up past it's first position. It may feel like you are forcing it just slightly--it's after the first natural stopping position.

This machine is solid, very smooth, produces excellent stitches. The area under the foot is not blocked (easy to see what you are doing.) The machine drives very straight (straighter than other machines that I've tested.)
