Mock felled seams
I have been making my own shirts for some time. The seams I use are flat felled seams, the same as are found on all good men's shirts. Vogue Patterns - 8539 MISSES' JACKET

Inserting sleeves
My sewing teacher taught me to sew two parallel lines at the sleeve head by machine and then draw up the threads until the sleeve fits into the armhole. I always had trouble with this method.
