| MY Pattern Contest Winners | By Deepika on 7/27/09 11:46 AM |
Finally, the winners of one of the most anticipated contests on PatternReview!
This contest truly shows off the talent of PR members. We only allowed self drafted patterns and look what smashing outfits were submitted!
27 participated in this very challenging contest. Blouses, dresses, tunics, gowns, even a corset...all were fair game for these designers!
Look at these designs. What incredible work! It's time to meet the winners!
First Prize: unfinishedprojects For 106519-1001 Moulin Rouge Gown

Stacie (unfinishedprojects) made this wedding gown in silk dupioni for her future sister-in-law, who wanted the red "Smoldering Temptress" gown that Satine (Nicole Kidman) wore in the movie Moulin Rouge. This gown was her first self-drafted garment project. To prepare, she watched Moulin Rouge "over and over and over again" and consulted movie-related websites. To ensure turn-of-the-century authenticity, she consulted a reprint of a 1901 guide to cutting ladies' garments. The heavy gown, fashioned with train and underlining, is secured with a strongly interfaced waistband. It's a truly memorable gown for a memorable day! | Second Prize:VeryPrairie For 53048-1000 Side Tie Infinity Tube Dress

VeryPrairie's goal in designing this elegant gown in rayon-lycra knit was to create something that "looked interesting but was very simple in design." The result is this black knit strapless maxi dress with two drapes that can be arranged to alter the appearance of the gown. Going back to basics (her serger wasn't working), VeryPrairie sewed this knit gown with her regular machine. Her photo above shows the versatility of this design! | Third Prize: Johanna Lu FOR Circle Rain Coat

Johanna wanted a stylish rain coat with a personality. A reader poll on her blog helped her narrow the style choices. Read her review to learn more about the construction process. If you're interested in sewing outerwear, you'll find her resources very helpful. |

| Sewing for Children Contest Winners | By Deepika on 7/23/09 2:33 PM |
Sewing for little ones is a challenge in itself! The purpose of this contest was to encourage those who sew for their children to try out and review some of their patterns. Patterns used were only those designed for children. We had 73 participants who used a wide range of fabrics and patterns!
Look at these outfits. Aren't these the cutest models?
Meet the creators of the winning outfits:
First Prize: callmeRuth For 8649 Vintage OOP Child's Dress

Ruth chose a Vintage Simplicity pattern in size 4 from 1954. Even though the pattern had a lot of interesting details, she made it look so easy! The full skirt is gathered and tie ends fasten into a center back bow. One unusual feature of the pattern: it has so many darts for a little girl's sundress. She recommends that everyone try a vintage pattern at least once. click here to read her review. | Second Prize: Sandi S For Portobello Pixie Analise patchwork dress

Sandi made the perfect twirlie dress for a little girl. Full of ruffles, this dress was made from an easy to follow pattern. She chose a variety of fabrics from several collections and added a smocked panel to the bodice of the dress. Sandi S topstitched the ruffles for extra taming. She has also given us a new sewing measurement: the twirl factor! Read Review here. |

| Ugly Fabric Contest Winners | By Deepika on 7/20/09 11:34 AM |
Our First ever UGLY Fabric Contest! We wanted to prove that there is no such thing as an UGLY Fabric, so we decided to do a contest to spark the creativity of our members. In this contest we asked our participants to take an undesirable piece of fabric from their stash and make something wearable with it.
We were right!
Look at these outfits. Aren't they lovely? But it's a contest so we much pick the winners. Lets meet them shall we?
First Prize: sewfossy For Skirt & Halter Top

Talk about making the most of every piece! PR member sewfossy was so inpsired by this contest, that she didnt just stop at her lovely applique skirt. She made a Tote Bag and a Halter Top as well! | Second Prize: CreativeDiva For Simplicity 5259

CreativeDiva used the argyle print to it's best. The repeating pattern in the fabric made pleating the skirt panel a breeze. A Cheetah print ribbon from her stash added definition to the pleated section. |

| New Kwik Sew Patterns | By Deepika on 7/17/09 9:40 AM |
We can always count on Kwik Sew for easy to sew, practical and Trendy patterns. I often recommend these patterns to beginners too! That's how I got started actually. The instructions included in each pattern envelope are more like mini sewing guides.
Never used a Kwik Sew Pattern? It's not too late to start now. I often get asked if Kwik Sew patterns are only for knits. Not true! In fact in this particular collection you will find lots of easy to sew jackets, and fall separates.

| Vote in the contests - Ugly Fabric, My Pattern, Sewing for Children | By Deepika on 7/6/09 10:28 AM |
It's that time of the month again. Voting has begun for the following contests. Our participants have worked so hard for the past two months so it's time for them to relax and for us to start voting. Voting ends on July 11
To help you cast your vote, the contest committee has come up with these helpful guidelines.
Vote in Sewing For Children Contest
Vote in the Ugly Fabric Contest
Vote in the MY Pattern Contest
Ugly Fabric Contest: If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then so is ugliness. We asked our participants to pick a fabric which they considered "ugly" and tell us a little bit about it. We then asked them to make something wearable from it! This is the first time we have run a contest like this and I am loving the results!
My Pattern Contest: A finished garment made from the participant's own design and/or original pattern. The title says it all. See all the original PR member designer outfits!
Sewing for Children: This contest is for people who love to sew for children using commercial patterns. We didn't allow self drafted patterns in this contest.
Guidelines for Voting
Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some suggestions that may help you choose when voting.
You may choose to assign a point value to each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your choices.
1. How well does the garment/collection/ensemble/item fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?
2. Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?
3. Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?
4. Is the review complete and well written?
5. Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well does the garment fit?
6. Creative points. You may choose to give credit here for extras including embellishment, creative interpretation of patterns, creativity in creating a pattern, or even for having the restraint to leave something strikingly simple.
7. Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex garment might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed.
